I couldn't have had it any better than this.
Beginning on my due date, I began taking blue or black cohosh. I did this for a week and nothing. I started to worry that he was going to be late and would have to end up in the hospital. I ended up taking a whole tincture bottle worth of cohosh and no change. My midwife suggested castor oil, and gave me her suggested dosage amounts. I took it on the morning of 1/23/04 (my mom said this would be a good day because then his birthday would be 1234. She's so silly) I took a long walk to my friends house who was going to be my older child's sitter during my labor. I began to get real emotional thinking that the baby didn't want to come into this world and be with us. My emotions were going up and down all day. My dh took the day off thinking that the castor oil was a for sure thing. I felt guilty for this, because nothing was happening and he took the day off. My emotions were crazy. I forgot this had happened the day of my first child's labor, and still had no clue that my body was actually beginning the process.
At 11:00 pm that night, I began my first contraction. They slowly and steadily became heavier and closer. I called my midwife and she came over. I labored most of the night in my bed next to my dh, breathing with the contractions, while everyone tried to get their rest. Around 5 am, the contractions became really heavy and I asked my midwife to check my dilation. I had to be between 5 and 6 centimeters before I was allowed to enter the tub. Yeah! I was 5 and a half centimeters. The second I entered the tub, I felt instant relief. My contractions did slow down a bit, but picked right back up after a half an hour or so. I stayed in the tub until his birth. I was in the pushing stage for about 20 minutes. He was born at 8:58 am on 1/24/04 with my oldest ds by my side. No tearing, light bleeding for 2 weeks. After I birthed the placenta, my midwife gave us all a lesson on the umbilical cord and the vessels inside and the anatomy of the placenta. It was pretty cool.
I love my midwife. If anyone in the Mendocino County or surrounding areas in California need a great midwife, here's her e-mail: mydwyfe@mindsping.com
Water's the way to go. If you have that option available to you, take it. It does wonders!
I guess I should have taken the castor oil on the evening of 1/22/04 to make a 1234 baby. :LOL
Many blessings and wishes to those of you planning a birth, home or hospital.
