Yes Greaseball, I am one who see's Thanksgiving as a sad day to remember the suffering of the indigenous people in North American history. It is a day of mourning for many

DD came home singing a song about "Indian Brothers" and how they helped the Pilgrims. Nice enough as far as mythology goes. It got so annoying after 50 repetitions that I told her what happened after that loverly first thanksgiving, how the Puritans made a lie of that friendship, killed as many of the indians as they could, and celebrated other thanksgiving days when they succeeded.

Back then they declared days of thanksgiving after particular events, one of which was a massacre of the local NA.

It'll be interesting to see how she takes the common lessons next year, what she remembers.

Did the Eastern tribes even use totem poles? I thought they were unique to the Northwest. As a Pagan and someone with a bit of multicultural awareness, I would object to the assumption that the reader is a monotheist but not the historical reality of the Puritans' religion. I would also object to the generalization about how Thanksgiving is celebrated. In my tradition it is customary to celebrate and remember Weyland the Smith, a traditional folk hero having nothing to do w/ the traditional American Thanksgiving origin myth.

well, that does not sound like "public" school. sounds more like "christian school" to me as well.

i'd voice my objections to the teachers, so that they are more sensitive in the future.

i can see your issue.

i think it could have been approached better...

and i think you will have to be more clear to your child about exactly what was going on with the pilgrams...

is more "freedom to worship" than "God".......

etc
