What do you do to get the best EWCM?

There are so many different tricks and tips that everyone tries to get really good EWCM - just wondering if we can share.

I'm still nursing my 12 month old and have noticed that I have horrible quality EWCM (sigh) Before, when I TTC her, I took Omega 3 oil and drank tons of water - that seemed to do the trick (I haven't started that yet since I only TTCd 1 cycle this time around - will try next time..)

Everyone else?

Dee~ I'm so glad you're posting about this! I've been wanting to gather more info on increasing EWCM, too.

I'm one of those folks that only has a lot of EWCM a few times a year...and wouldn't you know the last time THAT happened was the month before we started TTC.... anyway, when I got pregnant (accidentally) with our twins a few years ago, I was taking flax seed oil. Could be a coincidence, but needless to say I'm taking it again.

Dee~ what size dose of Omega 3 did you take? How often? How much water are we talking about?

This cycle I'm trying the Robitussin trick suggested in TCOYF. So far I'm not seeing any improvement, but several people have said it worked for them.

In future months that show very little EWCM, I'm thinking of trying Pre-Seed or even raw egg whites....When we first started TTC, I thought the egg white thing was the nastiest idea ever. Now, after several months and scant EWCM, I'm ready to try anything!

Any other tips, people??

Green tea!!!

I am not yet TTC, but I have been drinking green tea every morning (I weaned myself off coffee with it). I was amazed at the increase in EWCM!! I am talking triple the usual amount (or more) and for more days. It seriously amazed me. With these kinds of results, when I do TTC, I will definitely drink green tea every monring until I ovulate.

A few things that worked for me. I was trying just about everything, so I don't know which things had the best effect. Perhaps they had a cumulative effect...

eliminating caffeine
drastically reducing dairy
drinking lots of grapefruit juice--not red grapefruit juice, just regular
1 tsp robitussin 2x a day from about cd9 through ovulation
1 evening primrose oil capsule per day

14 months of ttc allows time to build an extensive repertoire.

Hi RedOakMomma - I hope more people post in this thread! It would be a great resource.

As for amounts - I took a teaspoon/day of Omega 3 herring oil by Nutrasea - it tasted wonderful - no fishy taste, just like light, lemon-flavoured oil.

Water - I would fill an 8 oz Nalgene and have about 2 of those a day (plus other liquids with meals, etc. ) I was never a water drinker per se so that was a huge improvement for me.

Okay, ladies-- I am practically SWIMMING in a sea of grapefruit juice, green tea, and raspberry leaf tea. C'mon EWCM!!

Question RE the Omega 3: I'm taking flax seed oil, but I noticed that Fish Oil is a really popular Omega 3 source. Is one better than the other, especially when it comes to fertility?

Going to go to the Natural Food store tommorow night to pick up advised EWCM helpers... Should you take Omega 3s (was planning on getting a Omega 3-6-9 combo to cover all bases) through your whole cycle? Same question with Evening Primrose Oil and Green Tea... whole cycle?

I just started these remedies a few days ago, and I already see a markable improvement:
-Drinking green tea like it's going out of style.
-Drinking lots of water.
-Taking evening primrose oil capsules.
-B-complex vitamin and OTC prenatal vitamin.

Next time I go to the grocery store, I'm going to get grapefruit juice and some Omega fatty acid supplements, too. Thanks for the ideas!

Does it matter whether the green tea is hot or cold? What about decaf. verses caffienated? Thanks!

The best ewcm I had was when I was taking ho shu wu (a Chinese herb) also known as fo-ti. Just thought I'd throw that in.

Well, I have been blessed with very normal cycles, with about 2-3 days of EWCM each cycle. Here is what I do:

**eat a good mix of wholegrain cereals in the morning, including a fiber heavy cereal such as all bran, an oat square with lots of iron, and one called, Uncle Sam, which contains flax seeds. Yummy and soooo healthy.
**sprinkle flax seeds onto peanut butter and banana servings
**eat plenty of good, wild alaskan salmon (or other deep, cold water fish)
**gave up caffeine after a 15 love affair
**drink as much water as I can stomach (which isn't much...my DH calls me a camel!) My secret? I put little slices of lemon or lime in my ice cube tray so my water glass looks chic and tastes good. I found the idea in a 1937 recipe book found at a garage sale.
**eat a variety of organic herbal teas, but in moderation....

Hope you are soon swimming in ewcm!

I got some GREAT EWCM this cycle! I took Evening Primrose Oil I started it on CD 10 (usually I ovulate on cd 15) and ovulated on cd 13...with MAJOR ewcm!! It was the first month I'd really tried the EPO..I guess we'll have to wait and see if it worked. But I can tell you in the last almost 2 years of charting, it's the first time I've noticed ewcm.

Trying to learn lots from you all. I just started replacing coffee with green tea and I started a prenatal vitamin. Funny-I haven't had a migraine since and my EWCM is, shell we say, more abundant. It's going to probably be quite some time before I can even think about ttc, though.

Stupid question of the day: Can you conceive without EWCM?
I seem to still have very scant amounts even with drinking enough water and taking loads of evening Primrose Oil...

plain Robitussin -- 1-2 tsp. 4-6 hours before GIO (don't go over daily dosage limit though!!)

I'm convinced that's part of why I conceived twins last time. I had so much EWCM all of those sperm survived to meet my 2 eggs!

I deleted my question - a little off topic and I found my answer on TCOYF.

Can't wait to try all of these EWCM tips - thanks everyone!

kellykins~ that's my problem, too. From what I've read in TCOYF, conceiving without any EWCM seems impossible. I'm trying all the things we listed above to try to boost my EWCM, but when that hasn't worked in any given cycle we use Pre-Seed when we GIO (a sperm-friendly EWCM replacement). You can order it online.

Night light?

Don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but some women find their cm responds quite dramatically to changes in the amount of ambient light exposure at night. Studies have been done that modifying the light exposure during sleep can help women with either "scanty mucus" or those women with "all the time mucus". Marilyn Shannon describes the phenomenon in her book on Fertility Cycles and Nutiriton. The Art of NFP also covers the topic, and includes research refernces for anyone interested.

The basic gist is to experiment by cutting off all sources of night light, be it from the windows, a bathroom light, or even a really bright digital alarm clock face.

here are an additional link with an excellent overview:

Hope this helps.

I have to second really regular diets, and *no coffee*- my kids were accidents but both conceptions occurred when I was trying to be really healthy for unrelated, general reasons. I know some have had great success with the expectorant, and egg whites, and I would also say plenty, plenty, plenty of water. Gary Null says a gallon a day for optimal health and I do drink about this much, esp when pg. Putting more fluid in definitely seems to generate more fluid coming out.

Kellykins-

In answer to your question about 'can you conceive without EWCM-YES!!!! That's how my first baby was conceived when we were avoiding. I had thought ovulation was still atleast 1 week away and it was a 'dry' day (No CM of any kind in sight). We bed 4 days before ovulation on the dry day and still ended up preggers! Very strange! I had dry days on everyday leading up to ovulation that month, but on the actual day of ovulation, I had tons of creamy/EW cm all of a sudden, but it didn't last more than about 4 hours then started to go away. Anyways, I ended up with a positive hpt 11 days later!

This month, while we're ttc I've cut way back on my soda waters to at the max one a day and have drank tons of water. It has made a HUGE difference!!! Plus, try to take your pre-natal vitamins fairly regular. Actually, you need to really get these in your system about 3 months prior to ttc, but if you start now you should be fine.

Good luck to all!
