This will be dd's stocking this year:

toothbrush
toothpaste
bubble bath
chocolate
nectarine
fairy finger puppet
charm for her bracelet
a new ornament for the tree

This is the way my mom always did stockings for everyone. Her standard list was:

toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss
chapstick
bubble bath in favorite character/scent
small toy/book/cd depending on age
candy
always a nectarine
a new tree ornament

Things would be added as people's interests changed, but you could pretty much count on the above. If anyone was getting anything little, like jewelry, it would be in the stocking also. Oh, and we got keychains every year when we started driving. Stockings were always the first thing we opened and were my favorite part as I got older.

What I usually got:

Candy (hard suckers, mostly)
Magnets (one year we all got faux candies, complete with paper wrappers - that was odd)
Pencils
Hair clips/scrunchies/barretts
Tangerine (not quite a yearly thing, but often)
Toothbrush (each person got their favorite color)
Gum (ALWAYS - and sugarfree, mostly)
Small things, like a rock with "peace" carved in it, or a small wooden animal
Post-it notepads (another always - and usually with a funny saying on it. I don't know why, but this was always my favorite)
Bookmarks
One year I got a koosh ball - that rocked!

Anyway, I think each stocking ("Santa" did one for everyone, parents included) never cost more than $5-10 dollars, but I remember it as being one of my favorite parts of Christmas, in part because although we all got the same /types/ of things, they were personally selected for each of us (in our favorite color, flavor, etc).

That may not be much help for a 2.5 year old, but it's what I got. Good luck!

What about walnuts? My kids absolutely love cracking them open.

Much of what has already been listed is our standard choice too. Chapsticks/lip gloss, card games, crayons. toothpaste/brush, bookmarks, candy, oranges etc. We always do a Lifesaver book too.

From the $0 holiday challenge, I'm gonna do beanbags for stockings for both kids, some chocolate (not much), and I'm searching for art supplies too

For hubby:How about a little tin of hot chocolate? Or a bag of favorite nuts or candy?

For kids: a small toy car, soaps for the bath that are different shapes. Bottle of bubbles.

I got a whoopie cushion in my stocking one Christmas. :LOL
I say stick anything that fits in the stocking that you think your ds or dh would like.

For dd in the past we have put a small stuffed animal (beanie baby size), a video or cd, an orange or apple, hair accessories, m & m's, cards...
fruit snacks, candy kisses, pencil grips, a worm ball.

Dh and I generally get more upscale candy & the obligatory orange.

When I was a kid we always got an orange, apple, and nuts.

My plans: Toothbrush, toothpaste, orange, apple, nuts.

Now, I like the beanie baby thing and chapstick...dd would love that!

For dh, hmmm I've put scratch off tickets in there before (for the fun, never thinking we'd win anything...we never do them any other time)...I think this year I'm going to add a stress ball for him .

:LOL

We always got weird underpants (animal prints or something goofy). My parents still do this and have started giving our spouses funny underpants as a tradition, too. You know you've been accepted into the family when...

My favorite stuffer of all time was my OWN roll of scotch tape. I was about 6 and there is an old home video of my opening it and exclaiming, "Tape! Mom I got TAPE! It's just what I ALWAYS wanted!" (THey still tease me about that.)

Anyway, underpants might be good incentive for a 2.5 year old and a funny tradition to start. Instead of tape, what about stickers?

The big hit with my cousins and me was the year we all got "water weenies" in our stockings--the water-filled rubber thing that looks like a cylinder but is actually a donut, so when you pick it up it slithers thru your hand--that is quite the thing to find when you blindly stick your hand into your stocking! :LOL It might not be safe for young kids who still put everything in their mouths though.
