Well, for the purposes of this forum, everyone has agreed that POC is someone who self-identifies as such.
Hmmm...I guess this concerns me b/c there are White ppl who consider themselves POC. And I feel that a specific forum for POC could be self-defeating to this community b/c whenever color is brought into the mix, things tend to get upsetting.
I agree that racism issues can be brought up in Activism, but I've never seen any (haven't been here that long, tho), so that leads me to believe that it's not a major issue for most of the POC who post here.
As far as my situation being unique, is it? I just meant that I don't see POC having all that many different gripes than others when it comes down to it, outside of discrimination that's based solely on the color of one's skin or what someone percieves to be your ethnic background. All of us have probably been discriminated against for something, and as I mature, I realize that many of the same issues I deal with, my White, Asian, Latina friends deal with too, except with concern to racism.
So, I'm still wondering why we need a specific forum (not saying we don't, tho). I have not felt like there is anything I wanted to ask on MotheringDotCommune would be out of place in any of the forums that already exist. But this is just me.
I know there are some ppl who think the forum's a good idea b/c it could consolidate posts that already exist or would do so if ppl post on specific issues dealing with color of skin(and the like), but I just don't see a lot of these posts. Someone earlier mentioned that maybe there would be more of them if there was a seperate forum, and that's possible, but IMO if that were true, ppl would have more posts of that nature on the boards already.
Problem w/ my opinion (or lack thereof, really) is that I don't read all the different forums that already exist, so I don't know if there are a lot of issues surrounding color being raised and I just don't see them.
