12wk old has body rash...allergy or sickness? Help!

Yesterday my ds was very irritable and upset pretty much all day, the night before I had eaten quite a bit of lasagna, he had a restless sleep and was quite cranky in the morning, he usually wakes smiling.

He was quite out of character yesterday, I couldn't get him to calm down very well and he wasn't nursing well. My milk was also taking a long time to come in.???. I gave him a bath to try to calm him down, which worked, then shortly after the bath he started getting a bit of a rash on his body, mostly just tummy, but it was very faint. Then around 7pm, it really started to come out. I had a piece of lasagna for lunch too... : It was quite splotchy and bad almost over his whole trunk and some on his face and head. He was crying til almost 12am when he fell asleep. He woke up once to nurse, not much...then didn't wake until 8:30 am. still crabby. He still has the rash, more on his face and head now, but it is quite light. He doesn't have a fever, or a cough, or a stuffy nose...But he has been spitting up quite a bit the last two days...since i ate the stuff.

He seems to almost have an aversion to my milk, and he is normally a non-stop nurser.

I am a little allergic to tomatoes, so i never eat them. I am wondering if this could be an allergic reaction to the tomatoes or something else...I can't get in to see my dr til tomorrow, but might go to a walk in clinic today.

What do you think??? I'm getting worried...

What does the rash look like (pink, red, purple, bumps, dry)? Was there anything new in his bath (oils, soaps, bubbles etc.)? Anything new with the laundry detergent?

It definately sounds like it could be related to your tomato allergy. Here is an excerpt from the book Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child regarding food or drug allergy rashes/ hives.

Quote:
Pink or red flat and raised lesions. The skin may appear swollen, and it may be itchy. Usually resolved once the offending food or drug is identified and avoided...
When my dd had hives it seemed to move around her body, kind of dissapearing in one place while starting to appear in a new one. That is another identifying factor for hives.

Poor little guy! I hope he feels better soon.

*ETA: Here's more on rashes from Dr. Sears (scroll down a bit).

Thanks for your reply! It is pink and splotchy, raised in areas, but yes moving about from one place to the next. I took him for a walk and when we got back the rash had faded quite a bit, and was almost entirely gone from his face. Then it got a bit darker on his trunck again after his nap in the warm and cozy sling...could it be a heat rash? Too warm in that fleece sling? I thought about the soap too, but we haven't used anything new...

I'm taking him into the Dr tomorrow, so we will see what she says. Poor thing...

I don't think so. Heat rash is more prickly looking with little raised bumps. It does sound like hives. When my dd had them they lasted a few days and they were aggravated by stress. Unless he gets a fever or any other symptoms I don't think he needs a doc. I think he'll be fine in a day or two. Try a little bath with baking soda to sooth his skin in the mean time. Hope it goes away soon.

not to make you needlessly freaked (since you mentioned no fever, etc- tho' my 2 yr old had none and my 3 yr old's was only at 101, not the blistery-hot 104 mentioned in every web med info page i looked at), but scarlet fever (!) has been going around here & we didn't figure it out till we were almost all thru it (ds #1 has excema so bad we just figured he had a cold & a really bad outbreak!) it wasn't till they started peeling that my dh mentioned his coworker + family were just recovering from a bad bout. it's prolly just a food allergy like you said, but since scarlet fever was the LAST thing i'd figured on re: rashes (we've already done roseola) i just thought i'd throw it out there (in case anyone else comes up with mysterious rashes.)

hope your tiny is better soon. suse

Well we woke up this morning and the rash was gone. I took him to the Dr anyway since we had the appt and it was there a little bit on his tummy again, I had just had him in the fleece sling for the last three hours, so it seemed heat rash like. She said it didn't look like an allergy rash, usually they are more welt-ish, but she said it was probably viral related and made more vibrant by heat, hence why it worsened with sweat and a warm bath. She said he has no fever, his glands aren't swollen and his ears look great, so I am thinking it is just being flushed through. His poops have been sort of green tinged and darker, which she said can indicate a virus leaving the body.

So hopefully this is over, or at least on its way out. What are the other symptoms of Scarlet fever? My dd had Roseola, that was nasty. But very different than this.

does your baby seem to not want to nurse when you eat tomatoes or dairy or wheat at other times?

Hopefully it was just a virus.

When ds was a baby, before we knew about his allergies he would protest while nursing if i had eaten one of his allergens.
