I'm confused by the whole "NO Poo" thing...why? - Page 2

this is so interesting to me. i have curly, dry hair and generally wash my hair once a week. the other days, i just wet it to kinda reactivate the curl. my hair does soooo much better when i don't wash it. once i went a month without washing and it still looked great (i still did the daily wet downs).

you mamas have convinced me to go no poo and give some of the alternatives a shot. thanks!

I think I might give this a try

Do you think no poo would work if you use gobs of product in your hair everyday?

Did you do anything besides wet your hair down? I mean did you use anything like bs?

To the OP:
Here's a link about why most 'poos are maybe not the best thing to be slathering all over yourself on a daily basis.

( I had IBS which cleared up when I went no-poo and household chem-free.)

Like gel, mousse, hairspray stuff?

I'd think it would be better than 'poo no matter what you're using :-D

A lot depends on your hairstyle, of course, but for mine, I don't really need much goop anymore. It behaves much more reliably.

(Of course if I had a mohawk, healthy hair would not be sufficient to maintain the style )

There are also *very* simple natural alternatives to gel, spray and mousse that you might find interesting.

Natural hairspray recipe:

Natural mousse:

And I've got to feed my kids <LOL!> They just got up ;->

But there's lots out there!

I think I'm going to do this also. I use all natural poo now but this would be cheaper.

I read on a group I belong to that you should brush your hair with a boars hair brush daily also.

What are your opinions on this?

About boar bristle brushes...

I've heard (but can't find the reference right now) that the boar bristles are close enough to the structure of human hair to help move the sebum produced at the scalp down the length of the hair shaft without causing undue damage.

I've used boar bristle brushes for ever, like since the 70's. Wouldn't think of using anything else.

You can find them in different degrees of stiffness or softness. I have one soft brush that I just love - it really moves the sebum down and makes my hair shine.

do you think it matters whether you get hard or soft bristles depending on you type of hair? Mine is thick and prone to tangling and I think a soft brush would be like petting a dog...not really brushing the hair.

Yes, I do think that matters (stiffer or softer bristles, that is).

I have fine (each hair is tiny) and rather thin (fewer hairs than most people), so a med-soft brush is able to work through it.

My dd's hair is fine, but much thicker, and her brush is somewhat stiffer.

Fuller Brush has some nice ones. I also owned a beautiful brush with a rosewood handle. Unfortunately, washing the brush to keep the bristles clean eventually ruined the finish on the wood.
