Score!!!

I just scored the *best* deal at my local Good Will! I was on my way to the yarn store and thought I'd stop into Good Will to see if they had any sitting around before I went and dropped a bundle on ultra-expensive goodies. Well... I scored a giant bag of yarn worth about $300 for $15! In it was, among other things, 14 skeins of Jaegar wool/silk blend, 10 skeins of plum acrylic/wool blend (I'm going to gift to my mother for a sweater), 3 skeins of a gorgeous variegated purple wool, 1lb of white cotton, and 20 or so other balls of miscellaneous yarn! There's also a beautiful finished sweater in there that just needs to be sewn together! I feel like I hit the jackpot, so just wanted to share with people who would appreciate it.

Great find!

I love thrift shops for knitting stuff, I buy most of my needles that way cheap! I've found good yarn too, snowflake, silk blends, other goodies for $1.00 a ball or less!

Wow! What a find! I'm motivated to go check out the local Goodwill. It kinda makes you wonder why somebody would give that all away....

Oh. My. God.

I only find sad broken crap at goodwill...you Canadians have all the luck...

:LOL Allison! Well, you can bet that I'll be going to our Good Will and asking about yarn on a much more frequent basis now!

As to why someone would get rid of this stuff... I suspect it belonged to someone who passed away. Why else would anyone donate an almost finished sweater, and packages of wool (obviously) bought/intended for bigger projects?

I called my mom and she's super excited to be getting some of this stuff. Though I think I threw her for a minute when I started the conversation with "Mom, I hit the jackpot!". She likely would have been even more excited if she didn't have the split second thought that we were all millionaires. :LOL

Oh, and Allison... Normally my finds at Goodwill consist of nasty parenting books from Ferber and Ezzo, which I buy so no one else will. You don't want to know how many copies of that crap I have hidden in the back of my bookcase. The good news is I have a plan for all those books that will repurpose them into something lovely and meaningful.

...Yes, you are probably right. Think of it as fulfilling someone's life's work (I know that you probably do ).

And good for you on the Ezzo/Ferber crapola...I HATE seeing a big ole display of that at the bookstore...I grab a few good books & put them in front .

Actually! I recently came into a HUGE abundance of needles and vintage wool and various mohairs..ect, the woman who gifted it to me is in her 50's and just has no time for knitting! and has lost interest. It does happen! it may not be all doom and gloom :LOL there was about 3 unfinished unseamed sweaters in this giant duffle bag, I turned one them into some nice longies and have plans to make some soakers out of the others.

My new plan for the bookstore is to bring along some labels with phrases like "messages contained in this book may be harmful to your child" and "buy The Baby Book by Sears and save yourself and your baby some heartache" etc. I figure sticking them on the front of the nasty books is not *too* bad a crime. :

THat's great, Melanie! You have to show us what you make with it! I better start looking at Goodwills, too! The best deal I've ever found was at a flea market where one lady was selling all this beautiful yarn for $0.75 a ball. I don't think she was getting much interest because I said I'd buy it all for $0.50 a ball and she said yes immediately. There was a pure Italian mohair one that I've already made into a gorgeous sweater for my mother and the rest is sitting nicely in my stash, waiting for inspiration (and time and energy) hits!

Wow!
You must have some decent Goodwill's nearby you.
I'm sure I'd never find anything even remotely close to what you scored around here.
Hooray for you!

You know Lori, the thing is our Good Will normally *sucks*! They mark everything way higher than it should be for thrift store prices, and often I could buy something new for less than what they're selling it there. The only exception is books, though even then they price the good ones at triple the "regular" costs. I just don't think they have any knitters there on staff, and have no idea how much this stuff costs. That, or they have one knitter who wants to be extra generous to everyone. :LOL
