Are there any drawbacks to wood floors? - Page 2

Right now am not sure how to fix the squeak of old floors... When we pulled up the floor we put in our kitchen, it had old news papers under it. I assume besides dating the floor, they were put down to less the noise... but I am unsure. The papers were flat and crumbly. If your floors are old, they may have a layer like the news paper that has degraded. I'll let you know, if I figure anything out.

Sorry for hijacking, but what do you all clean your HW floors with? We're getting HW that will have that polyurethane coating and the floor store sent me home with this spray stuff that is definitely not something I want to be using (i.e. it's probably toxic).

Aside from swiffering, what do I use to clean it and how often should I do it?

Thanks everyone - your posts have been helpful!

I forget the name, but it is a vegetable oil based soap made for hardwood that doesn't have toxic ingredients in it.
