I'm concerned that my 3rd grader hasn't started learning multiplication yet (at school--we're working on it at home). Has yours?

We go to Waldorf and my children started addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in 1st grade. They completed this process in 2nd grade but still review it in 3rd grade. I think they are working on long divison now.

Wow, I must be really off w/my expectations! 3rd grade seems late for multiplication introduction to me.

We use an online charter school, and 2nd Grade Math starts multiplication and division about halfway through the 2nd semester.

So, they're behind. That's what I thought. (public school in Utah, in case you were wondering.) Why do I get the feeling that we're doing BOTH public school AND homeschool? Anyone else feel that way?

A guy in my office moved from Utah to North Carolina to Washington and he is always talking about how bad the public schools are in Utah. He has found WA public schools to be the most challenging. This is from someone who helps their kids with homework every night and has children from the ages of 9 to 20. I wonder what is up with Utah. It seems that with all the LDS there that the schools would be better.

Well, usually we're dead last in per-pupil spending (sometimes we tie with Mississippi : )

There are so MANY kids to educate that the $$s don't go very far.

For what it is worth, I taught all four of my children their multiplication tables in second grade followed closely by division, long division, decimals, and %'s.

My youngest taught himself all of them in one week. He is like that.

I teach in a private school in CA, and we start in the second grade, using the Abeka curriculum.

When I taught in the local public schools, we started in the second semester of third grade.

As a student myself in third grade in a private school in the early 1960's, I learned the multiplication tables first thing in third grade arithmetic. However, by the end of the third grade, we were doing two step word problems and multiplying with two and three digits in the multiplier.

I'm in WA, so that could explain why I thought it sounded really late.

Actually for me, my 3rd grader has started learning them and it seems too EARLY. I learned my multiplication in the latter part of the 3rd grade year (basic, basic), then we hit it hard in the 4th grade.

My son is in a private Christian school (on the abeka curriculum) and they started at the end of 2nd grade. They are doing division now! It seems too early for me!

You're not alone...Ds started on multiplication in Ohio in 2nd, but here in New Orleans in 3rd, they'll be starting after the holiday vacation.

He was in public school in Ohio last year and private Catholic now.

Have to say it, there is a HUGE difference in schools by region. My father was in the Navy and we moved once every 1-2 years. I went to A LOT of schools. I can still remember being bored when going from Northeatern states to more southern states. And after seeing ds's progress going from South to PNW, MW, and then south again, yikes what a nightmare!!!

I seriously have a love/hate relationship with the south since moving back! :

And I absolutely feel like I send him to private school and homeschool him, too!

My dd1 is in 3rd grade and they are just starting it (Washington state - GREAT school and FANTASTIC teacher). I learned it in 2nd grade but it was a brand new teacher and I remember the principal was mad that she had taught us. Seems silly if we "got" adding and subtracting not to move on to multiplication. But I don't think multiplication in 3rd grade is behind - seems about average to me.

My dd attends a private montessori school in CA and started learning multiplication in 1st grade.

Multiplications

My son is in Second grade in a public school, and they are deep in multiplications right now. I think he can write them all.
