Can you machine wash a comforter with cotton batting?

I have a summer weight comforter made of 100% cotton (the brand is "Just Cotton", and I believe it has 100% cotton outer with cotton batting inside). The care instructions say "hand wash - line dry". Do you think I could get away with machine washing it on gentle? I really don't want to hand wash it. I don't even have bathtub, so it would have to go in the shower with me.

I know the Just Cotton winter-weight ones say "hand wash" .. because too much agitation makes the batting get a little lumpy.

That said, never had a problem with it. Machine wash warm, delicate cycle, dry on low heat w/ a tennis ball/rubber ball/clean sneaker for fluffiness. Even better if your washer's a front-loader, you won't need the ball or sneaker.

Thanks so much for your reply. So I should wash it with a tennis ball of some kind? I have a top-loading machine. Sounds good to me. I will be line drying, though, because I don't have a dryer.
