my mom wants a poncho for xmas. FOR XMAS! so i need to find a thick/chunky yarn that will crochet quickly. it HAS to be burgendy/cranberry/maroon and soft. and i need something that i can pick up at Joanns, Michaels, or AC Moore since i don't have time for shipping.

any ideas?

draw a picture of a poncho for your mom, give it to her in a card and tell her you have converted to Greek orthodox and she will get it on January 5th?
No, seriously, if you don't mind crocheting with it, wool ease thick and quick is your friend.

I was also going to suggest woolease

woolease, or lion's thick n quick chenille. the chenille crochets up REALLY fast and is SUPER warm (i made my sister's poncho out of it, in forest green)

I loved the chenille, used that for a hat for dd, and I am currently using the woolease for my moms poncho. Im making it for Christmas for her, and it is so dang boring to knit. Ive done longies, and hats for the girls since I started this task. I keep joking Im gonna make her a lap blanket. :LOL But both were nice to work, the chenille softer ofcourse.

The wool ease thick and quick has a pretty burgendy color

The Lion Brand Jiffy yarn that the pattern was made for actually works really well too. It's nice and soft. It's supposed to feel like mohair, though I don't think I've ever felt real mohair before, so I couldn't tell you if that's true or not. LOL Try the color "Wine."

I had to come out of lurkdom to reply. In the last month I've made four ponchos from the patterns on Lionbrand.com. I've used boucle & homespun, my mom has used Wool Ease & they work up very quickly! I've also seen some really nice ones in Colourwaves. Mind you I was doing childrens ponchos so they didn't take long at all.
