Storing Yarn with their labels?

Okay, I'm a little confused. I'm trying to think of a creative way to store my yarn along with the labels that came off of them. Since I roll almost all of my yarn into my own balls, the labels obviously can't go back on them. And I would throw the labels out, except that I might need to know what yarn a certain ball is one day incase I'd want to buy more. So, does anyone have any creative ways that they store their balls of yarn and the labels? All I can think of is throwingeach ball of yarn and it's label into zip lock bags or stapling the lable onto the end of the yarn. Not too creative, eh? :LOL

I store all my yarns in see-through Rubbermaid bins still in twisty hank form until I need it, then I roll it into a ball.

for my stash yarn, I take about a yard or so, cut it off, staple the label to it, and put in a protective clear sleeve and file in a three ring binder. This way, if I need more, I've got the dyelot # available. When I do a swatch, I put the swatch, with all needle size and such info on an index card, in that same sleeve

(yes, I am an anal, organized freak, LOL, but it comes in really handy for designing)

I don't roll my yarn into balls until I'm ready to use it. If I do, for some reason, or the label seems like it will fall off easily, I do one of two things.

1-Put the whole thing in a ziploc bag.
2-Hole punch the label and tie the yarn through it, attaching it to the ball.

I usually do the first thing, since I have to protect it from my cat anyways.

Ohh I never even thought of hole punching the label and attaching it! I like that idea and I also love the protective sleeve idea. Hmm, two great ideas to choose from. Thanks!

I keep my labels on until I wind for use.

But I am going to start a knitting journal, and I am going to record the pattern used, what yarn, what color, what dye lot, what guage...all that info so I have a reference point

I have a journal type thing -
I tape the labels in - with where I got it, what I used it for. Mostly I use it for washing instructions, so I know what I can do. I haven't been saving the label of every color though...just one from each brand. And then I write down the color and dye lot of what i use.

Adina,

Did you buy a special journal or any particular kind? I am going to go search for one this week, any thoughts? Thanks!!

No, it is a pretty little spiral bound lined notebook I got from Target. One label per page, with room for notes.
