Well, you got me there. I was referring more to the movies he wrote/directed/conceived. I forgot he was even in PB. :

Apparently, though, some people DON'T like The Princess Bride.
I'm not one of them, my only regret is that Cary Elwes' career didn't turn out as promising as it looked in that movie. He's pretty much only gone downhill, save for his role in Lady Jane (swoon).

I also hated Eyes Wide Shut, but the most recent HORRIBLE movie I've seen was Wicker Man. Oh somebody slap me for renting THAT one!!:

The fifth element with Bruce Willis was awful.
Eragon the movie was pretty bad. My 5th grader was so disgusted with the movie. He loved the book (as did most of his friends) and he hated the movie. He and his friends love to discuss how bad the movie is and how much they got wrong. They are so much more unforgiving than I am.

I saw The 5th Element for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Loved it. Especially Ruby!

My "worst" movies have got to be

Scary Movie (DW and I walked out of that one)
and
Cat in the Hat (We didn't make it past the opening credits)

I think I already replied to this some time back, but I'd just like to point out that many movies are improved by checking them out from the library. It's amazing how good a movie becomes when it's free and you can fold your laundry while watching it.

Which should tell you just how bad "Lord Love a Duck" was, and just how depressing "The Sent Down Girl" must have been. (For the first picture Pi done as a live-action 1960's Disney movie, for the second the main character's only friend shoots her and it's the happiest ending *I* could think of for the movie.)

LOL. Dh and I LOVE that movie! We have it on dvd. Of course, we also love Bruce Campbell. We have all sorts of versions of Army of Darkness, Evil Dead, and Evil Dead II (directors cut, special editions, etc). Dh loves that I want to name our baby if it's a boy Asher. He already plans on calling him Ash. LOL

Though I have to say, we did not like (I think the name is) The Man with The Screaming Brain. We had high hopes for it.

OH I thought of one...Baby Geniuses...it was a triple feature at the Drive-In and we wanted to see the first movie and the third movie. Well Baby Geniuses was the second movie and that was the first movie we ever drove off on...painful! Not worth getting through to see the third movie at all.

I think this is the first time I've replied to this thread and I didn't read the whole thing through, but if it hasn't been mentioned yet:

Boxing Helena

I'm really forgiving when it comes to movies, unless I feel personal about the story in some way, but this movie was so disturbing when I watched it years ago, plus just so dumb, that I'm STILL telling people not to watch it.

Even just seeing it at the movie store makes me feel all icky.

Movies I hate

I hate most of the following movies because they are either too violent, too sexist, or too disturbing. I try not to see these types of movies, but the descriptions and reviews and hype that movies are advertised with are often very (and probably purposefully) misleading and inaccurate.

Punch-Drunk Love Too much pointless violence. And why would the female lead be at all interested in Adam Sandler's character?

Face/Off Way too violent and disturbing.

The Piano :Puke Ick, horribly misogynist, violent, disturbing, upsetting. Just dreadful.

Vanilla Sky Stupid and violent movie.

Sleeping with the Enemy Totally disgusting movie full of sensationalized sexist violence.

Pretty Woman Gross, sexist movie.

The Royal Tenenbaums This movie just bored me to tears, so boring that I've already forgotten about the offensive parts.

American Beauty The affair between the old dude and the young girl: totally nasty.

The Blair Witch Project A pathetic excuse for a movie. And I can't believe that the producers lied and said the footage and murders were real.

G.I. Jane Too much violence for me. And the attempted rape scene is really disturbing.

Arachnophobia Yuck. And also what a stupid movie!

Misery This movie has haunted me for years, and not in a good way. I truly regret seeing it. Well, I regret seeing all of these movies...but the perverse, sadistic, and way too graphic scene of violence in this movie just turns my stomach...even all these years later.

Harold and Maude This movie is too depressing!

Priest This movie would have been a good movie except for one major flaw that ruins the entire movie for me: the main priest character finds out about the sexual abuse of a child in his parish, but doesn't act to save her from being repeatedly raped by her father because he has some lofty ideals about the confidentiality of confession. Then in the end the girl supposedly doesn't mind that the priest didn't help her, and in fact she feels some implausible affinity towards him just because he's gay. Whatever.

Twin Peaks Ick. Another ridiculously violent, sexist and disturbing movie.

Thieves (Les Voleurs) This French film was pathetic, and the way the female protagonist is exploited bothers me. And then there are also several disturbing scenes.

Guardian of the Frontier (Varuh Meje) This is a Slovenian film that is one of the worst movies ever made. It's basically a horror/pornographic movie. Yuck.

Oh ... and Dukes of Hazzard (the Jessica Simpson remake) :Puke. We didn't even make it through the opening credits. Turned it right off. Luckily it was a DVD from the library, so no $$ shelled out on our end.

rayo de sol-I also detested The Piano. My bil went off once talking about how tender, romantic and sensual it was, and it then occurred to me what a freaking hoax had been pulled on an audience of suckers desperate to call themselves "sensitive". It was an utterly odious "relationship"!

On the other hand, American Beauty is on my list of one of the best films ever. The "almost affair" between the old dude and the young girl was totally nasty. What redeems the film is this point of view is shared by the pathetic "old dude"/protagonist as well and his better self manages to somehow grow up and snap out of it it just in time. On the other hand, Mr. Holland's Opus had another point of view. In that film, this teacher (who remains on a pedestal throughout the film) also doesn't submit completely to the "nasty" yet flattering attentions of one of his high school students--only enough so that he is supportive of this teen student of his sneaking off alone, unbeknownst, from her home, parents and school, to run off to New York to make her way on the Broadway stage! Can somebody tell me why this guy would still be teaching at all after that, let alone celebrated as a hero?

Don't get me started on French films. What is it with the French films and their obligatory and gratuitous scenes of bared breasts? It's as obvious and formulaic as the Hollywood car chase or the cowboy whistling to Ennio Morricone in every spaghetti western.

Glad to see some others that didn't like "The Piano". I walked out of the theater and wanted my money back!! It was AWFUL!!!! I never got why everyone seemed to like it so much!

American Beauty is my all time favorite movie. I love the point where he wakes up and realizes that his daughter's friend isn't what she has portrayed herself as but rather is a scared little girl looking for affection. His gentleness with her and the realization of what he has almost done is so heart breaking. The whole film is about him awakening and how his family and friends respond to it. I cried for a solid 15 minutes after the movie ended because it was so beautiful.

I agree, American Beauty was so moving.

The deal with the French and all of those naked breasts in movies is just culture IMO. It's the same way we (in US) don't get all in a tizzy over a naked male chest. I think the US could do more with the "breasts, so what" attitude, instead of our over-sexualized, forbidden attitude.

The producers of the Blair Witch Project didn't lie. I knew it was all fake, and never got the impression from advertising or anything that there were real murders caught on tape. I knew from the get go it was actors holding the cameras and improvising. The script was "scenarios" handed to the actors on pieces of paper and they had to act it out. The ad campaign was set up to look like "case profiles", like it was all real, so I can see where one would get that impression.

Frankly I think they did a good job and it scared the crud out of me That was the only movie that kept me up all night jumping at every noise : I've found that with that movie people either thought it was brilliant or thought it was crap.

The second Blair Witch Project movie - that was terrible!
