How many sts onto each dpn?

I'm knitting up a hat right now, kinda winging it with no pattern, but I've got a problem. I have 68sts, and I need to move over to dpns now and k2tog to finish it up, but I have no clue how many sts to put between how many markers. I have 3 dpns, and i tried dividing 68 by 3 to see how many to at least get onto each dpn and go from there but it's not an even number, so I'm confused. Help?

Just divide them as evenly as possible...23/22/23 might be good to start. It really doesn't matter as long as your marker is not at the end of the dpn. I just finished a hat & had to reorganize/move stitches as I went along.

Thanks, that was what I was figuring

Okay, and it's hard to explain this part of my question, but, how many groups on each dpn do I need? Does it matter if I have, say, 2 groups on each or 6?

If by "groups" you mean groups between decreases, no it shouldn't matter. I'd just start out as evenly as possible and rearrange stitches as needed.

okay, seems like you've gotten it figured out, but I just have to check on something, LOL. You wrote that you've got 3 DPNs. Is that 3 total, or 3 to put stitches on, with a 4th that you'll use as your working needle? You can't really do it (without making yourself crazy) with just 3 needles total, becuase you need an empty needle to actually work the stitches with. (check more babies thread on DPNs knitting from yesterday for more on this, LOL)
