Okay, anyone who has ever talked with me about making AIO's knows that I think 1mil PUL is better because it's not so stiff, holds up just as well as the 2mil, doesn't make that crinkle noise, and is just gives an overall better fit. I also think a DWR coating is ABSOLUTLY without a doubt necessary for a wick proof AIO. I think too many AIO's out there are made using PUL without a DWR coating and then mamas use them and assume that all AIO's wick. It's just not true! PUL with a DWR coating will not get wet on the knit side. I've even had them come out of two hot washes and not be wet on the knit side! So, they cannot wick. Without it, water (or urine) soaks right into the knit side of the PUL.. wicking.. horrible wicking.
Anyway.. I've been telling mamas this for a long time.. and then they say "okay.. great.. a non-wicking AIO sounds awsome.. where can I get this 1mil PUL with DWR?" and I'm lost.. I dunno.. I get it directly from fabrite .. which just isn't an option for most mamas who just want to make a couple of diapers here and there.
BUT, janelles PULs has it!! http://janellespuls.com/ I'm so excited.
I do NOT want to debate if DWR is necessary or not. There are lots who think it's not necessary. I personally have had diapers with it and without it and every single one with it is still in my stash .. many for over 2 years getting washed on hot and dried on hot twice a week and still going strong... no wicking. Those without it, wick the first time, and every time reguardless of using polyester thread, not doing a casing for the elastic, and drying on hot to seal holes. They just wick. That's my experience. I simply want to let mamas know where to get PUL with DWR since I've found it to be the most important ingredient in an AIO that doesn't wick (besides not putting a print on the AIO *LOL*) and I know there are lots of you out there pulling your hair out trying to make an AIO you can trust. It's not you.. not your sewing.. it's most likely your PUL.
I hope it helps someone. I've orderd there before and got great service. Her prices are awsome. The 1mil PUL everywhere else costs $8 a yard WITHOUT the DWR coating and fabrite charges an extra 50 cents per yard to apply that coating.. so the $8 a yard with it is a really great price. She also sells by the peice if you don't want an entire yard!
