I have heard that seeing a chiropractor during pregnancy is supposed to help. anyone know anything about this? If I'm not having any problems, is it still something I should consider? When do you go? Last trimester or all along?

When I was pg with my son, I started having some crazy siatic like pain, I went to see a "non-directional force" chiro, and it really helped. Very non-invasive, but effective. I think I first saw here around 3 or 4 months, and maybe 1 or 2 times more.
I also took my son to see her when he was 4 months old (I'll take the baby earlier this time), and she did a few adjustments on him. I've heard that there is a relationship between SIDS, and having some of the cervical vertebrae out.......anyway, that's for another thread!
Yes, I really found ch. to be beneficial!

If I can make the arrangement with a chiro I can afford I plan to go once a month and then more regularly the last month. I had a lot of back problems last time and I had a sit down job which didn't help much.

love love love
i had a wonderful chiro who saw me through both pregs. and my kids too, until we moved away from him.that and massage therapy was my prenatal regime. i couldn't have been happier with it. i have to qualify that i think that ALL of us "Civilized" people should receive some degree of chiropractic care.
good luck, many chiros do seem open to the idea of exchange for goods / services...

We love chiro! My 4 yo ds goes once a week. We've been able to completely control his terrible asthma with chiro. He was taking 8 meds, hospitalizations, ER visits, long nights of attacks, but now hasn't taken a THING in over a year!!!! and has no attacks either!
I plan on going a little later in pregnancy. I was going to ask him if he thought chiro did anything for ms, but I haven't heard that it does. I know accupuncture helps....so I'm sitting here green....waiting for them to call me back!!!

Well, as you can see from my user name I am a big believer in Chiropractics.
I was adjusted through out my entire pregnancy with DD and I really believe it helped me in labor.
I was adjusted weekly, sometimes 2 times, during the last couple of months. Your joints are so loose at that point, but it does help for a while.
DD had her first adjustment around 1 hour old.
Also, if your baby is breech, there is a technique (adjustment) that Chiropractors do to turn a breech baby. DH has had 2 turn for him.
Any questions, please ask me and I can ask DH. He can give general advice, but you should obviously consult your own Dr.

I went for an adjustment yesterday and I must say I'm happy I did. I hope to go for at least monthly visits with this pregnancy. I truly believe it makes a positive difference.

I LOVE my chiro! I started going to take care of migraines because we wanted to get preg and I didn't want the meds in my system. My DH and DD are now regulars. I am currently getting adjusted 2x a week by a dr. who practices Gonstead techniques. He's actually helped with my nausea!

I am a chiropractor. There are many reasons why chiropractic is beneficial for all stages of pregnancy (and life).
First of all, when you become pregnant, your body starts producing a special hormone which allows for greater movements in your joints. It does this so that your pelvis can expand properly for the growth and delivery of your baby. This means that your joints can more easily subluxate (if you want to know what a subluxation is, then please PM me - it is easy to understand).
Another factor is the changing biomechanics of your body as a result of your changing body. This results in additional and new stresses on your spine and nervous system. No one is educated to deal with this as is a chiropractor.
Thirdly, if the bones in the lower back or pelvis misalign (subluxate), they can change the physical space that your baby has to live in, which can lead to possible birth difficulties.
The most important reason for getting under regular chiropractic care during pregnancy is that your body is supporting this new growing person. Your nervous system controls every system in your body that your baby depends upon. If your nervous system is not functioning at 100% because your spine is subluxated, your baby is not getting 100% from you!
A majority of women who are under regular chiropractic care throughout their pregnancy find that the birth process is easier and quicker!
If you have any specific questions on chiropractic and pregnancy or how to find a good chiropractor in your area, please let me know!

What kind of chiro should I look for while pregnant? Any specific method? I am having pain in hips and pelvis. Doc (actually PA) prescribed Vicodin, pregnancy massage and possible physical therapy before seeing a chiro. I don't agree with him, but convincing my dh is going to be tough. I prefer the activator method, but I noticed that it seemed to take alot more visits to solve the problem. Whereas usually a more forceful adjustment required fewer return visits. Any help would be appreciated. I am 24 weeks pregnant and in Santa Fe.
Thank you
Thank you

CalgonMoment,
There is a chiropractor in Santa Fe named Dr. Windy Carter. Her number is 505-424-9114. I don't know her address so you'd have to call. She is experienced in providing care throughout your pregnancy and is trained in the Webster technique should you require that at the end of your pregnancy. I don't know her personally, but she is part of one of the pediatric organizations to which I belong.
There are many adjusting techniques that work. A pure Gonstead practitioner or a craniosacral practitioner would also be excellent choices. IMO, the best chiropractors place the utmost importance on educating their patients about subluxation and how it relates to total health. I recommend that you find a chiropractor whose yellow pages ad doesn't only talk about only "low back pain" and such. Sometimes the best chiropractors don't have an ad, only their name listed.
Here are a Gonstead practitioners in your area:
Dr. Jerome and Melanie Buenviaje
3600 Rodeo Lane, Ste D-2
Santa Fe, NM 87507
505-984-0821
