Dental: brown spots/stains in 23 m.o. teeth

Hi All, hope to find answers from all you wise mamas. I've searched through the dental archives but they seem difficult to read with all the smilemomma deleted posts. I am very concerned because we've found some brownish spots, like staining, in the two front teeth of 22 month old ds. I tried brushing gently to specificaly see if they could be removed but no, they are definitely there. I'm lost because we brush teeth every day, eat no refined food at all, and eat super healthy in general. I have read however that general tooth health is somewhat contagious, and dp and I have not the best dental health; we are working on it but we wonder if our cavities from our previous not healthy eating life are affecting ds. And the brown spots, are they cavities? Is there sth than can be done besides going to a dentist? we try to stay as much away from the medical world as possible.

Thanks a lot in advance

It may be flourosis (sp?) from getting too much flouride. Does your city water contain flouride? However, my two front teeth came in with the brown spots. I am not sure if they can just appear. Check out Mercola's website

Dear ERSsmom, thanks a lot for those links!!!!!!!!!! I've read them all and am now pretty sure this is fluorosis . I've been researching and yes, there is fluor in the city water, and by law!! : I've should have known better. So, a water filter is tha way to go, right?

Thanks a lot, ERSsmama

Glad I could be of help. Definitely get a water filter. We are lucky enough to not have flouride in our water, but the city we lived in when I was young did. The sad part is that to fix the brown spots, it is cosmetic dentistry and not covered by most insurance. However, my spots faded over the years. Most people do not notice them. Your DS hasn't gotten his big teeth yet, so maybe they won't come in with spots! Good luck and keep him away from that poison!!

This article which I posted on another thread will give you more info:

National Flouride Database Launched

Many packaged foods and drink also have unacceptably high levels of flouride in them.

Also, dental flourosis is more than cosmetic it is an indication of flouride poisoning. Flouride can cause many internal problems including thyroid malfunction, altered mental status, such as depression and violent, uncharacteristic behavior, memory problems, gastrointestinal problems, cardiac arrhythmias, liver problems, bone problems, and joint, tendon and muscle problems, including rhabdomyolysis.

It is very nasty stuff indeed.

I too thought I was a good brusher but my son got brown stains on his front teeth and they were cavities. Now I look at his teeth all the time checking for any color that should not be.
