Hi There,
I was hoping to get some suggestions in night weaning my 22 month old. I will give a little bit of history, he was exclusively nursed by the breast from birth since birth and cosleeping until about a month ago at 21 months. At 8 months I introduced solids and water in a sippy cup ( no bottles or pacifiers were given). By about 14 months he seemed to breastfeed less frequently and sleep right through beside me without nursing in the middle of the night. At about 21 months I noticed that he was not wanting milk at night at all, he started to want it only at bedtime. I wanted to continue nursing him yet I wanted to try to put him in his own bed since I wasn't sleeping well with him beside me and my husband. We got a double futon mattress and decided to put his never used crib in storage and set up the bed in his room. For the past month now we have been putting him down for naps and bed in his own bed. The usually routine is bath, stories beside him in his bed and then I nurse him until he pulls away saying he is all done. At that point he turns around in his bed and assumes the going to bed position, I kiss him on his head, give him his little stuffed elephant and he is usually asleep in about 2 minutes. No crying and no struggle. He has never cried to go to sleep. When he wakes up in the morning I hear him talking and awake so I come in. He has a little bit of milk, sometimes like 4 sips and then he gets up for the day.
A whole month has passsed and things have been running smoothly and then this past couple of nights he is changing the routine and I am not sure how to handle it? He is starting to wake up crying in the middle of the night and wanting to be nursed, he screams "mommy milk". My husband is trying to go in to soothe him first but ends up bringing him back to our bed so I can nurse him and then he seems to settle down. The reason I am not going to his room myself is because I can hardly stay awake let alone walk to his room this past couple of weeks. I just found out I am pregnant and have been tired a lot. I really don't want to wean him until he is ready but I do need my sleep and I would really like him to sleep in his own bed. Any suggestions on how to handle this differently? Please help, I don't mind the idea of tandem nursing yet I am not willing to nurse him at night when the baby comes along. Please help!
