I don't read often, but would LOVE to follow this one!! [I am an "organization junkie" I think...]
I am Sandie, Mommy to Taylor 4.5, Wife to Joe "Going on 40!". We live in Seattle and I have only been a "stay at home mom" for 2 years now, before that my husband was a "stay at home dad". I've tried many many "organization" ideas. Some work for us, some dont, and some I'd like to do again. I've enjoyed tips from Feng Shui ("Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui"), and "Confessions of an Organized Family", as well as FlyLady.org
My #1 Goal this year is to clear out enough of my garage to fit a CAR in it!?!? This is a BIG job. My main problem is all of the "outgrown" baby/kid stuff and how to decide what to toss/donate/sell and how to sell via ebay/newspaper/yardsale Etc. I am tired of brusing my shins on boxes trying to get at something!!
My #2 Goal is to make some sort of Family Notebook and start Family Meetings. We have lots of lists and calendars and charts. But they are all over the house and sometimes I am the only one who knows they exist, etc.
My #3 Goal is to get back into the swing of having a clean-ish house. I had a dozen people over for a casual sandwich dinner for Christmas and just about died when I went into the bathroom after a few hours (and after at least 2 trips by my Grandmother!!) only to realize that there was still toothpaste splattered all over the mirrors and fur stuck to the toilet and "who knows what" if I I'd looked under the seat too!!
I recently pulled (and lost?) a magazine article that had a GREAT checklist of housework that I'd like to try. If I find it I'll try to remember to post it. It had suggestions of frequency of chore, etc. I could use motivation/encouragement on that one Big Time.
What I've done so far that works for me is I bought a Day Planner (want Franklin, but too much moola, sigh) and lots of "Home" sheets with things like Menus, Shopping Lists, To Do Lists, Excersize, Travel/Vacation, Gift Lists, etc. I try to fill out the menu page once a week and write down on the shopping list any items I need for the menu. I then keep my day planner on the kitchen counter next to the phone open to the Shopping Lists page. As things are needed we write them down and as I buy them I cross them off. (Taylor now has his own note book where he "lists" and then walks around the house/grocery saying "check"
I usually have a Weekly To Do list that consists of key-word reminders like "returns - macys, safeway, library, blockbuster" etc and I number them in order by the map and day of week and initials of assignee (me or hubby) then I cross them off as they're done. Same with housework on Weekends like "kitchen, bathroom, wash dog, mow lawn" etc. FYI This works ONLY by mutual consent though!! Hubby and I agreed that Sat AM would be "chore" time and Sat PM would be "family play" time. If we do our chores during the weekday then we get to play sooner or sleep in or what ever. If we "work" an entire weekend we get to "play" an entire weekend too, but the "work" weekend comes first.
