That's great about the movie..when I lived in California there was a theater in San Jose that offered a mommy movie morning..you could take your baby and the movie was quieter and there were all other babies and moms so a little noise wasn't so bad. I really enjoyed that. With 2 kids I really can't do that anymore..I'd be chasing my 2 yr old!

Well..Sophie just woke up...

We took all the kids to The Polar Express. It was fun.

Does anyone know how old the baby should be before you eat salsa?! I made dinner tonight (woohoo!) and there's about 3/4 cup of mild salsa in the dish and half an onion. It tasted super good, but was it a bad idea?!
We are bid on mexican food, so dd has been having salsa in my milk for quite awhile, and we haven't had a problem, we're having chili tonight too. I think it depends on the baby.

Jill, I don't think that it matters how old they are when it comes to "fussy foods". I think it depends on the baby, and the only way you'll know if something won't set right is to try it. I would just keep the common offenders isolated so if you do have a fussy day you will know what to eliminate easily.

Stacy, You must have been exhausted. Taking 3 kids anywhere sounds challenging, but to the doctors would be brutal.

So I had my last mw appt yesterday (a week late) and I cried. I was having a crappy day already, and they ask how you're doing emotionally, and everything just poured out. I think it's because I'd not gotten sleep, as Xander's sleep pattern changed to a newborn's again. I feel like I'm on a hamster wheel all day long... baby needs changing and Owen gets into something, I ask nicely, and then tell nicely and then yell, and then feel guilty... baby needs nursing Owen gets into something... and so goes my day. Showering is a luxury, and even going pee uninterrupted is impossible. They gave me a bunch of resources in the community and said I can keep in touch if I need anything because I don't really have a family doctor (and there aren't any accepting patients in this area). I was there from 4:30 until 6:15! Dh even called to make sure that I was still there and not stranded somewhere, and it takes a lot for him to start to worry.

And then I get home and he's got supper ready (leftovers, but still it was nice) and told me to let him know when I need him through the night and to go to bed when I'm ready (which wasn't possible as Xander marathon nurses all night long). Don't know who stole my dh, but I'll take this one. Then Xander fell asleep at a reasonable 10pm, and slept until 4! I don't exactly feel like a new woman, but I feel better at least.

So now I have to take the car in... whee! So much for sleeping in.

I'd second that it doesn't matter how old the baby is - some have sensitive stomachs, some don't. With my first I could eat anything, with my second everything upset his tummy. He was like that until he was about 18 months - not just anything I ate, but a lot of food he ate upset his stomach. Just the way he was. Nothing seems to bother Bronwen yet - keeping my fingers crossed.

nak - as for tummy time, bronwen id definitely not a fan. both my boys rolle by this age - 7 and 5 weeks - she just lays down and fusses. actually she frequently drives her face into her play mat. she doesnt push up on her arms, she pushes with her feet, driving her butt up in the air and pushing her face down. putting her on the boppy just made it worse - gave her something tto go up and over.

i can't believe how big some of these babes are. Bronwen was one of the first born - 10/28 - and only weighs about 10 1/2 lbs. That according to two of our house scales. She hasn't had a 2 month appt and she's already 9 weeks. This new dr we have never asks you to schedule the next one and I always forget. Anyway with the new house closing at the end of the month, we'll be moving so we'll need a new dr anyway. Not going to try to get her in just to be measured. I'm still undecided on vaxes for her so I appreciate the delay.

But since we missed the 2 month can anyone tell me what their dr's looked for, just so I can see if she's on track? She's doing this soooooo differently that my first two it makes me wonder . . . then I think they are all different . . . then I wonder again :LOL Don't you just love being a mom

Karen, I am so glad you post here. Willow is exactly the same way with tummy time. She kind of commando crawls w/ her face smushed into the mat. She refuses to even try to lift her head. Mostly she just gets angry. I was playing w/ her on the floor last night and she was as happy as could be, so I thought I'd try tummy time, and as soon as she got on her belly she started screaming. She was so mad that she didn't calm down for at least 5 minutes after picking her up. I guess that they'll figure it all out in their own time.

Don't worry Karen, Sophie is probably around 11 lbs according to home scales so you don't have the only small one I'm sitting here with her in the new native sling and she is loving it..she's been asleep for over an hour in the thing..phew. we finally got the xmas tree down and my LR isn't a disaster area now

I'm one of the "radicals" who vaxes so our 2 month is later this month. Sophie is 7 weeks today..she is OK on her tummy for short periods and is lifting her head very well, but is definitely not rolling. Funniest thing she does is when she catches sight of her feet while in my lap, she smiles at them in amusement

Have a great weekend folks

Well, we just had a well-baby appt. on Friday, since the one last Friday ended up being up a sick-baby appt. She asked if baby is following you around the room w/his/her eyes, if baby is cooing and smiling,...um, I can't really think of any other developmental things she asked. She tested Bronwynn's neck strength and whether some of the newborn reflexes were almost gone. She also highly recommended vitamin d drops since babies don't get the necessary amount of vit D in the winter. Any thoughts on that? Last time I had a spring baby so it wasn't an issue. Bronwynn's lungs were much clearer but not quite normal, she's still wheezing a little. We are down to just 2 breathing treatments a day now. She's lost 6 oz. in the last week, for a total of 11 lbs. 13 oz., but the dr. did not seem too concerned since Bronwynn has started daycare and she was sick. My milk supply has kind of plummeted in the last week too; the dr. gave me a new prescription of Reglan to help with that. My older dd decided to cut a few teeth this week as well, so it's been a stressful week. to all the mamas and their cute babies!

Ah..the vitamin D issue..OK..do you have sunlight a couple times a week? Is Bronwynn getting out in it, or even by a window where she can get some? Are you dark skinned or fair? The thing is, most babies do NOT need vit. d supplements, doctors are just panicking because of a few cases in places where winter is quite dark (northern climes) and/or the people are quite dark and kids have gotten ricketts from vit. d deficiency. the other thing is, if you drink cow milk, she will get some from you, too. If not, just get her by a window for a little while whenever it's sunny and she'll get enough

Well, she's in daycare 5 days a week w/o sunlight and it's dark by the time I get home. The only time we could get any sunlight would be on the weekends. I do get some cow's milk, but I'm not a big milk drinker. Do you still think that's enough? My dr. didn't say it was essential, but said it would be easier than trying to get her in front of a window for the amount of time she would need.

Oh, and we are caucasian, fair-skinned. Not really sure why that makes a difference.

I have an observation on the weight issue: Ava's weight fluctuates quite a bit, or so it seems. I only weigh her on our home digital scale by weighing myself first (scary) and then me while holding her and subtracting. At my 6-week post-partum appt, she weighed 13 lbs, 2 oz. I weighed her again at 8 weeks and she didn't seem to have gained. However, dh weighed her one morning (13.5 lbs) and I weighed her that same night (15 lbs.) and then the next morning while she was naked (13 lbs). What gives? Today dh weighed her and she was at 13.5 lbs. She'll be 9 weeks tomorrow. Strange, huh? I wouldn't think they would fluctuate so much. I have no idea why that's happening, but she seems happy and healthy! I guess she must be getting enough.

What does "nak" mean, anyway? I'm not hip to all the lingo.

Meg, are you going to LLL this week? I'm planning to go, so I'll see you there.

Nursing at keyboard - basically an explanation that the following typing might be atrocious due to one-handed typing while squirting milk all over a wiggling little (or not so little) person .

Makes a difference because fair skinned people absorb more vitamin D from sunlight than darker skinned people. Kind of like you are more likely to sunburn because your skin doesn't block as many rays.

Oh and scheelimama, I hope the milk supply issue straightens out. I can only imagine how frustrating that must be. hang in there!

One of these days I'll get pictures of Bronwen up here. We have seriously slow dial up right now so it's impossible to do anything with photos. Soon though. Everyone's baby's are sooooo adorable!

Thanks, Karen. Although I frequently do "nak," I didn't know that I could notate it that way.

Alisha: I guess you will have to judge for yourself if you think she is getting enough sunlight I don't know how much is enough, honestly, I was just told that even a little time by a light window daily was enough.

Dawn: Yup, I will be at LLL unless someone gets sick.

Vit. D requirement

Okay, according to What to Expect the First Year (no, i don't especially recommend it, but someone gave it to me), fair-skinned babies need about 15 minutes of direct sunlight a week to get their Vit. D requirement. I was concerned about this a little, but really I think we can get 15 minutes a week.

I don't eat any dairy foods, but pretty much every prenatal supplement has the full amount of D, plus if you're still taking extra calcium, most of those have the full requriment too, so if you add all the d-fortified foods (milk, soy milk, energy bars and drinks, some breakfast cereals, some juice drinks, anything with supplemental calcium, and lots more), by my estimate most preg. women are probably getting significantly more than the maximum recommended of this vitamin. But my MD told me that it isn't passed in breastmilk in high concentrations, so she recommended giving it directly to the baby.

OK, I've got a question. I can't remember when babies start taking 3 naps a day. Bronwen is 9 weeks old and still takes about 5 or 6 little cat naps a day. They range from 5 minutes to about 30, unless we're holding her or lay down with her - then they're over an hour. I've already had two horrible sleepers that wouldn't nap unless you slept with them or put them in the car - I'd really like to avoid that again - can't really manage that with 3 of them. So does anyone know when they stop sleeping on and off all day and take actual naps?
This is so silly..I don't remember that either..I just remember that one day Eli was taking a morning nap and an afternoon nap...then one day it was only afternoon LOL...talk about motherhood brain..

So how is everyone doing this week?

We got in with the doctor I was praying for after stalking his receptionist the last couple of months . Our appointment's tomorrow, I so looking forward to it! Rookie mom question here... what is tummy time good for in terms of is it more for treatment of tummy troubles or required for development. How much are babies suppose to have? Edie's 8 weeks old. I just put her on belly when massaging her back and little butt !

Congrats on getting into the dr you wanted. I'm nervous about finding a new one after we move.

As for tummy time, while some baby's with tummy troubles like it, it's actuallly for developing their neck muscles and their arm and back muscles. Babies used to crawl much earlier; now that they sleep on their backs and are in car seats, etc on their backs so often they dont' develop the back and arm strength to crawl as early. How often? They are actually "supposed" to be on their tummies most the time they are awake but no one I know actually does it that often.

So are other people's babies still sleeping on and off all day? Bronwen was sleeping great at night but now it seems like she's back to sleeping more during the day and being up more at night. My first two were horrible sleepers - my 2 yo is still up several times a night and still hasn't slept through the night yet - so I'm not sure what's normal.

I wish you sleep.
