question about nursing older baby/toddler

My DD is only 4 months right now, so I am kind of thinking ahead here. When she is 13 months DH & I have to go to a wedding that is out-of-state. I am planning on leaving her and her big brother at home with Grandma for the 2 nights we will be gone.

But I dont plan on weaning her before that. If I pump milk for the time I am gone and she drinks it in a cup - will she still nurse when I get home? Will solids and expressed breast milk tide her over enough?

The most important thing I can think of is to make sure you not only pump milk in advance but also pump milk regularly while you're gone, to maintain your supply.

You should be okay for just 2 nights, although it may be tough on her & on grandma. Just be ready for a nice extended session when you get back!

And yes, DEFINITELY pump while you're gone. If not... :

Is there any way you can bring your nursling after all? That sounds like a traumatic separation to me. Can you get a fancy sling and wear her to the wedding?

You will definitely need to pump while you are gone. My DD was sick and for 2 days last week nursed very little and I got engorged after about 16 hours of it. Yep, still plenty of milk and if it doesn't come out, OUCH!

At 13 mos, your DD may still be nursing as much as she does now, just with a bit of solids thrown in. Would you do it now?

Well if it were right now I just wouldnt go. I am sure by that age she will be eating a lot of solids, so I will just pump a lot. Maybe I can make it for one night - we'll have to wait and see. Or who knows maybe the couple will cancel the wedding and I wont have to worry about it. :LOL

Is there any way you can bring her? Being away from her like that may be a bit traumatic for her. And, yes, she could wean. That happened to a coworker who went on an overnight trip at 14 mos. only to return to a son who no longer wanted to BF.

Good luck!

My ds was not eating enough solids to not breastfeed until 18 months, and he never took a bottle - he had to have the breast. From my perspective I just couldn't imagine being able to leave him for that long at that age, but I know others have successfully done it.

I agree that you should pump a lot while away, if you have to go without your dc.
