Biophysical Profile, Induction, how late is too late?

Ok, so today is my due date. Im 40weeks. My first two both came at 39weeks. Last week my midwife estimated the baby was already over eight and half pounds. I know she thinks Im going to tear because she brought it up again today. I had episiotomy with both previous babies and really want to avoid one, I know that in twenty years my mw has only had to do one. Both previous births were also hospital births. Ironically one of my main reasons to start researching alternatives to a hospital birth was the routine use of pitocin, which I don't want. And now this one threatens to be the one overdue who may end up in an induction. I really don't want to induce. I was there today and have dialted not even a tiny bit, however my cervix is fully ripe (soft) and 50% effaced so thats progress, right?

My mw said that if I dont deliever by next week (41 weeks) I have to go get a biophysical profile. Anyone had this? Whats involved? I know u/s, right? Did it tell you anything useful? I know midwives arent suppose to deliver after 42 weeks. Neither are doctors really, right? I mean, my understanding is that you will be induced by 42 weeks. But yet, some people DO go over that, so how does that work and what are my rights? If the baby is fine and I chose to wait, will I not be able to use the mw and birthing center? :

Hopefully it wont matter, if Im ripe and effaced, I should start to dilate, my mw swept my membranes and then we came home and had sex, just to help things along!

If you were facing this choice, what would you do? Do I even have a choice? If I have to be induced, does that mean I have to go to the hospital? Do mw use pitocin? Or will she try AROM?

If you were facing this, would you use "natural" means of induction, such as primrose oil or herbal teas? And if you know anything about these methods, or have used them, what actually works and whats old wives tales? Information please. Thank you in advance.

The best thing that I can recommend to you is getting Henci Goer's Thinking Womans Guide to a Better Birth. Check and see if your library has it, or visit your local bookstore, have a seat and read the sections on induction.

BPP test for a variety of things, but one of the biggest issues with it is the measurement of amniotic fluid. It's very subjective based on the tech and the baby's position and SO MANY women are induced because of "low amniotic fluid", when infact, this is a NORMAL finding at the end of pregnancy.

Your body and your baby will go into labor when he/she is ready. If you're being forced out of a mw attended bc birth, I would only induce at the last minute. Even then, there are a variety of ways to determine your due date and I would ask for a bit of leeway with a different formula.

You're so close! Almost there!

Oh I do plan to hold out till the last possible minute! I have started having contractions within the last hour, so maybe this time they will progress. Here's hoping!
