When the placenta "overgrows" into the uterus. As I understand it, this can cause maternal hemorhage following delivery?

as above Accreta. It is conincidental to see this question asked, as we had one in our unit, unexpected just last week. The poor lady ended up with a hysterectomy. It was her 3rd child. Poor mama had a fantastic natural, unmedicated, no pit labor and delivery and ended up with an abdominal hysterectomy. So sad. The whole unit was shook up about it. The lady was literally bleeding to death on the operating room table. She had a few units of blood given and volume expanders.
NOTE: This was the ONLY accreta that we have ever had in our unit in 9 years that had a hysterectomy..so this is rare!

We had one at our community hospital and it was so bad grew into bowel and abdominal wall. Hysterectomy was obvious and 23 blood product infusions, 2 obs and 2 other docs, CPR, we were glad she lived! Unfortunately with more c/s these may only increase in number.

How come??? I had a c/s on my first, and am ttc my second. Just saw an accreta case on Special Delivery the other night.

So why does c/s increase the occurance (I'm assuming that's what you're saying with this statement)?

Thanks,

Beacuse accreta is more likely to happen at the site of a c-section scar. Another risk that is usually not disclosed about c-sections.

Lori

eta The risk is still very small, but accreta has been on the rise, and that is attributed to the rising number of c-sections.
