Fundraising for Tsunami disaster in school

My 5 yr old came home with a note about next week, she gets to wear civies (they wear uniforms, Catholic system) clothes IF they bring at least $2 to add to pot for fundraising day that day for disaster in Asia. Anyone else's schools doing this, especially in Canada? Just curious. Of course I will send money...apparently our government will still match us citizens dollar for dollar until Wed next week so the rush is on......other than that DD hasn't mentioned much has been said to them, which I guess kind of bugs me...they want money (of course for a good cause duh) but don't tell the kids much...dumbing it down sort of you know?

My dd's school sent home a note about fundraising. I do not remember much about it other than they were asking for $1 from each kid. I do not know if they have said anything to the kids or not(she's in grade 1). I imagine in the older grades they would have.

Your elementary Catholic school kid wears a uniform?????? What board are you in? I've been told getting uniforms in the elementary separate system is impossible.

Oh, and they are collecting loonies and twonies, but I don't think there is an incentive.

My 5-yo's school (in the US) is also collecting funds to send to the Red Cross, though there is no "reward" for donating money. I am actually happy that they haven't gone into any detail about the tsunami to my son, since it's a heavy topic that I want to be able to decide how much/what type of information he gets about it. I know my son and I know he would not be able to handle many of the images and stories that are out there.

I asked Tirza yesterday if they were supposed to bring money to school(did not say what for) and she said she did not know so I am guessing that they are not mentioning it. Usually for things like this right before the deadline they have the kids write it in their journals but there is nothing.

I have not mentioned anything to her about the Tsunami, she has no idea anything happened unless someone mentioned it to her at school.

Yes we have uniforms in elementary shcools here now, it came into effect Sept/04/ It is awesome.

Interesting many have opted out of discussing it with your children. I debated, but overall we decided since she will catch the odd glimpse on TV either here or at my folk's place, we'd tell her. Plus the schools did so regardless.....I basically played pick and choose in what to show her from TV so far...the waves, the loss of houses etc....obviously NO bodies etc. But I have been blunt in telling her about the loss of life (not descriptions but numbers) and we have discussed what ifs (happening here) and so on. She wasn't wanting to give up money and we discussed also what if WE suffered such a tragedy wouldn't we want support and so she now understands why we are offering money even though we ourselves are broke.

The reason I have not mentioned it to her is she is obsessed with death. We had 2 deaths in 2003 and just got her to stop asking and talking about various parts of death in the summer of 2004. I am not sheltering her from it. I have watched it on TV and i have found out since my last post on this topic that in the school on the wall they have put up crosses. Each cross represents an X number of deaths from the Tsunami. They are doing it as a way to get the kids to understand the realm of casualties. I imagine that is at the end of the school where the older kids are and not where the 1/2 and K classes are. If she was to ask any questions about anything she has seen or heard I would talk to her about it or if she was a little older.

I totally understand. I wasn't questioning any of you mamas at all please don't think so. I was more or less trying to figure out if MY way was off a tad...being blunt and honest with mine, but mine is not as questioning about death or anything, just kinda over her head......but her small selfishness needed a bit of readjustment in my mind, the not understanding WHY the money is being collected and seeing as her school sort of went ahead and discussed it all without a proper explaination we felt it necessary to tell her more details to give her the understanding.
