I think DS has weaned (at 5.5 yo)

I just wanted to post a little something here in this forum, because it was here that I first learned that this was possible, and not at all outrageous. Mi idea of EBF back then was anything over a year....

Anyway, our BF relationship had a rough start, because DS was kept away from me in the NICU for 10 days, and I had to fight nurse after dr after nurse to avoid him have any formula, and I succeeded... then I went back to work when he was 7 months and pumped until he was almost 2 years.... but never gave him formula.....

So here we are today, I am pregnant and I know that this is possibly a strong reason why he is not taking any milk anymore (he says it's yucky, or that there isn't enough) and I just wanted to post this to acknowledge our milestone: 5 years and 5 months....

Unless... when the baby gets here and my milk comes back, he may want to try again? does anybody have any similar experience?

I have ot admit mama, when I read how old your dc is and how he just weaned, I was kinda feeling a little freaked and exhausted about the continuation of nursing my girls (they are 4.4). May I ask what it is like nursing a 5 y.o? Much difference? was he already going to sleep with out nursing?

I can understand your exhaustion.... twins! I was sort of "ready" myself after around 3.5, and started "suggesting" weaning when he was about to turn 4. Truth is, at that age he was just nursing in bed, both morning and night. And I don't think it felt much different at 4 or 5.... well the size obviously And he was able to go to sleep without BF'ing but he would rather BF if I was near.... so DH put him to bed a lot of the times... and we got to the point when I told him he had to choose between BF'in in the morning or at night, I think when I became pregnant —ouch— and he wouldn't complain.

5 years old? How can this be? I was about to start a thread asking how old do you go with child-led weaning then I saw this. I didn't think it would be that old to be honest with you.

I remember when I was five and that (personally) isn't something I would care to recall...

Out of curiousity, can a mother get in legal trouble for this? I ask because I thought I remember seeing a story on the news a good long while back about a mother who nursed her five year old.

Congratulations on 5 yrs, 5 mos of nursing! I too first heard about extended nursing on this very forum (thank goodness!). You should be commended for allowing your son to set the pace and wean on his own timetable.

I didn't say you did anything "wrong". I just wanted to make sure you knew the rules and guidelines before coming into converstion regarding this subject. Perhaps you should start a new thread?

Congrats! 5.5 was the age my dd told me she was ready to wean, we had a weaning party but she nursed about twice a month for another 4 months.

You will have sweet memories of it

Mmm. I may do that. Someone was answering my questions on another thread though as well. From what you said I thought maybe only those who have already decided to or are currently practicing this could post here. Didn't mean to interupt this thread. Sorry.

In fact, when I was pregnant with ds my first question was: How on earth does one choose what formula is best for one's baby? mostly because my previous "baby experience" was surrounded by formula fed babies, and sadly I felt it was the norm and the adequate..... But I got into research and I was lucky to have found publications like Compleat Mother and Mothering, and the answer came clear to me that I was going to give the best to my baby by breastfeeding him.... I, also, was somewhat surprised back then that there were women out there breastfeeding toddlers and beyond....

Firemom, I remember when your daughter weaned, I think ds was around 3 and I thought "wow, will I be nursing for 2+ years?" I must say that it was you and delia's mom who inspired me and gave me confidence to follow my and my son's instincts and needs..... As you said, we will both have sweet memories of it....
