Hi Liz!
Just thought I'd chime in with my experiences. We have a 2002 VW Jetta sedan, and two Britax seats in the back seat, both outboard - a Roundabout and a Super Elite (the earlier version of the Husky but nearly identical - I was WAITING and WAITING for the Husky to finally come out, but like you, my baby needed the Roundabout so we got a good deal on the SE).
They fit great in the car - they just don't move at all. The belt path for the SE requires a long belt, but ours works - I assume the Passat would be fine. The seat is big and heavy, no question, but I am so happy we have it. It's very cozy, and ds really likes it. We almost always just leave it in the car, and have a booster for car-pooling and the like (ds is now almost six, so I'm comfortable with a booster now, though I still prefer the SE).
The middle of the back seat is a *really* small space, since the SE is so big. I do drive a child from my ds's school home in the afternoon, and she fits, but it is way too tight for an adult. I think the arrangement is fine for our 4-person family, though - a seat for everyone and a little valley in the back for coats and such!
When I was shopping, I also considered the Marathon (I don't think it was actually out yet either, but I did the research!), but I wanted something he could be in for quite a while. I read that the Marathon was rather narrow, and like your dd, he would probably have been on the top slots already.
HTH - the Husky is a really great seat. I hope you can get the fabric you want in time!
Becca
