Hi - I'm a provisional instructor now so yes, I've been to the teacher training. They do actually last this long or close to it. I think we may have gotten out more like 9 to 9:30pm though. They let you keep your children in class with you if you'd like (not sure if that's a concern for your friend). I had dh stay at the hotel with me & the kids. He brought the baby to me (she was 9 months at the time) to nurse/sleep/whatever every once in awhile. Sometimes he & both kids were there. It went much better than I expected. Let me know if you have more questions.

i'm the "friend" :)

Hi - I am the friend mommy2be was talking about. Basically, I want to go and get affiliated sometime this year and I was trying to decide if I should have my dh and dd go with me or go without them (okay, so I don't want to leave her here) - but she would be almost 2 at the time and I just don't know if it would be better for her if we all went or if I just went by myself and got it done. Since you have been, what are your thoughts? And while I'm at it, how is your provisional teaching going? Are you charging for it? What did you think of the conference? Sorry so many questions! Thanks!

My opinion is that you should bring your dh & dd. They're totally fine with having your child come in & out of the class. That's what we did. Bring some quiet toys & books for her to play with, lots of snacks, pillows, foam mat (we bought a cheap one at walmart), & blanket. That way you can create a comfy bed for her to nap on and a comfortable place for you to sit the rest of the time. Most people did sit on the floor. Our class was held in a small banquet room of a hotel. It was real casual. Lots of people had young children in class and they'd play together a bit. It's all about family and Jay & Marjie Hathaway (who founded AAHCC and run the workshop) support that.

My provisional teaching is going pretty well. I'm almost finished teaching my first series - I just taught class 11 (out of 12) today. I think my students are learning and it's so nice to be able to share information to interested people. I am charging, although at a discounted rate. I'm thinking of charging more next time around. The first series has got to be the toughest - for obvious reasons. It's soooooo much work preparing for each class. I'll be glad next time around when I can simply review what I did before and maybe refine a few things. Turning in reports after each class are a pain but you only have to do this while you're provisional.

I loved the conference. The days actually went by pretty quickly and there was lots of good info. It was also great being around like-minded people. I would recommend that you get the academic package finished before the conference. You can bring it with you and they'll look it over & make you provisional before you leave. Wish I had done that! Good luck & PM me if you'd like to talk more.

You can go to http://www.bradleybirth.com/info_request.asp and fill that in. Make sure you check the box at the bottom that says Training Package. I think it brings it up in PDF form right then & there after you submit your info. The training package will show you what you need to do to become certified. Basically you have to read a bunch of books which you'll then create questions & answers for each (like what you might quiz your students on), you'll outline Dr. Bradley's book Husband Coached Childbirth, you'll do 2 hospital evaluations, go to 2 LLLI meetings and fill out a form about those, put together a resource list for parents (like all the birth & baby related things in your area - they give you more specifics), and attend & report on one Bradley class (or a full 12 week series if you didn't take Bradley when you were pregnant). Then there's the teacher training workshop, followed by teaching 2 full 12 week series as a provisional teacher, a final exam that you do at home, and then you become certified. Let me know if you need more info. You can also call the Academy of Husband Coached Childbirth directly and leave a message. They'll call you back & answer any questions. Their number is 800-4-A-BIRTH. HTH!
