References?

Did you ask your pregnancy and childbirth care provider for references? Did you check those references? Did you ask your doula for references? Did you check them?

I never thought of checking references on the OB that I saw or the medwives I switched to.

I thought of checking references on the doula, but ended up hiring a doula-in-training and ours was her first birth. No one has yet called to check up on her.

This has really come into my mind because I think if I where to have a homebirth I would hire a midwife and I would probably ask for references and I was just wondering if I would bother checking them. I'm wondering if anyone else has asked for references and if so, have you checked them. In checking, what did you ask?

I would probably ask around, to see if other mamas had pleasant experiences with the childbirth care provider. I wouldn't, however, base my decision ONLY on other's people opinion, because a lot of people's opinion do not necessarily reflect the truth.

I asked other HB mamas and my MW is a legend and beloved in my city. I wasn't that happy with some of what eventuated for me after my traumatic transfer and felt she could have been more supportive but other women would practically crawl through broken glass to have her attend their births and have hired her several times. I think it's an excellent idea to check with other clients and all practitioners should be happy to give you a list of them to call.
