Prefolds as Postpartum Mama Cloth

Can anyone comment on how bulky these felt? (I don't have any on hand right now, just birdseye flats, which are not feeling very comfy when I try them on.) If you used preemie size, did you find them absorbant enough?

I am very much against anything bulky, but get irritated by disposable pads. I was thinking maybe even though prefolds are thick, they wouldn't feel as hard to move around as flats or terry-filled pads, since the layers are very soft. Does that mesh with your experience? Basically even though I obviously want something very absorbant for the first couple of days/buckets of lochia flow :-), I would be willing to accept some risk of leaking in exchange for a trimmer, more comfortable pad. Suggestions?

I think for the first couple days these would work. I think it would be too much after that .

I used cloth pads during pp time and LOVE them!!! I will never go back to sposies!

Check out Natural Home and Body care forum. There is alot of info there on cloth pads.

premie sized prefolds are less bulky, more absorbent, and much softer than sposie pads, especially the kind the hospital gives out. Infant prefolds are bulkier, but still softer than paper pads.

what my midwife suggested, and what i did, was to sit bare-bottomed on top of chux pads those first few days. The air circulating makes you heal much faster.

I used pf for pp and since I was in bed not going anywhere it was fine. My pussy was so swollen that it didn't matter to me if the pd were a little bulky My mw had me in bed on my side lying down for 2 wks plus one more week on modified bed rest while my mother was still in town to care for the house and my boys.

I did use an OB pad when I went out to the chiropractor's office a few days after birth.

I prefer cloth pads now. I had to hurry and make up a few when af returned on me earlier than expected.

That's a good idea about the chux pads- I wish I'd thought of that. I got so nappy sitting around in pads for two weeks...

The prefolds thing cracks me up, though, because I used them not AFTER birth, but BEFORE. My membranes ruptured and I had no pads or towels or anything to keep from ruining the car on the way to the hospital, so I grabbed a handful of the prefolds I'd gotten ready for DD and stuffed them in my pants. It worked great, although the labor nurse thought I was cracked when I asked her for a plastic bag to put my diapers in!

I knew the fluid would gush out, but I always thought one big gush and it's over. Nobody ever told me it keeps coming and coming and coming...
