Sara May was born January 7th at 3:19pm. Our original due date was February 17th so she was 6 weeks early. She was 5lbs 3oz and 18inches long. My water broke the night of Jan 3rd and we stayed in the hospital on antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection and a round of steroid shots to mature the baby's lungs. I was induced the morning of the 7th and she was born 11 1/2hours later drug-free!!!! I made it through pitocin without drugs!!! Sara is currently still in the NICU and was supposed to be discharged yesterday morning but she has developed some sort of infection that is raising her heartrate to dangerous levels and is causing some apnea spells. We expect her home in the next 2 or 3 days though because once the antibiotics kick in, she'll be fine once more. Her only troubles at birth were maintaining her body temperature and feeding. Her suck-swallow-breathe reflex was not fully developed so she needed to be tubed for feedings for the first 6 days. Her lungs really benefitted from those steroid shots and before contracting this infection she was breathing room air with her oxygen stats at 100%. No problems whatsoever. She is currently beginning to breastfeed but is mostly bottlefed expressed milk until she's a bit stronger. We have trouble because she falls asleep so fast that she doesn't take a full feeding at the breast. She is trying though and we've had one complete breastfeed with no supplement and a bunch of smaller feeds at the breast with a bottle afterwards. We are trying to overcome this and go to exclusively breast, no bottle. In the meantime I am pumping every 2 1/2 hours around the clock(exhausting!) to keep up with her so that when she comes home we can move away from bottles. Once she's home and I have a little more time on my hands I will post her birth story.
