Acid Dyes, where?

I want to purchase some acid dyes for yarn to get some nicer more vibrant colors, and Im a little tired of KA, Ive used every color we have locally.

But I have no clue about acid dyes. I know you can go to dharma for them, but when Im there, I have no idea what ones I want. They have descriptions, but Im still not sure where I fall, and I also dont know how much I need, ounce wise.

Also wondered if there were brand names that I could find locally, and maybe where I could find them. Say if Hobby Lobby has them where would I go? I asked a worker and she didnt even know what acid dyes were, which doesnt always mean they arent there somewhere. So what would be some mass produced names, and if not is there a place that has lower prices then dharma? Wanting to get the best deal, means I can get more dyes.

Thanks!

Walmart and Hobby lobby have Rainbow Rocks, JoAnns has Dylon.
I have not used the rainbow rocks and normally use the Dylon. I use my large stock pot. I think the packet says to use 1 packet with 1 gallon water.
Last time I dyed some yarn, I used 1 skein of Bartlett 2 ply, but could have dyed much much more.
Normally I'll just find stained t's and stuff and throw it in to use up the rest of the dye.

Have you tried using Wilton's icing colors yet? They come out very vibrant and have a good variety of colors (black!!). You use them pretty much the same as KA.

I have a few colors of Wiltons for birthday cakes, and have no idea how much to use. When I tried using the green before, it turned out a weird color, cant remember now. But I had thought I was using a lot of dye and Im guessing maybe not??? How much of it should you use?

Thanks for the tip with the dissolving too!

last time I used Wiltons for this
I actually used 2 cups water, 4 packets pink lemonade koolaid and 1 entire container of Wiltons orange. then stirred til the gel was completely dissolved. I love the color

You use the same amount of Wilton's as you would Koolaid. Basically, an ounce of dye, per ounce of wool. They are great because they are realtively non toxic.

Acid dyes produce amazing colors, but are somewhat more toxic. If you use them, make sure you don't use the same pots as you would for cooking.

You can also use procion dyes, but the color will not come out the same as it would on plant fibers (like cotton). So do a test swatch. For instance, wool doesn't absorb the blues from green - so you will come out with basically florescent green, lol!
