Baby Oil

I learned here recently some good reasons not to use mainstream baby oils etc. I heard that some of you use Burt Bee's. What else do you moms reccommend? I went to the store to pick some up and did not like the smell of Burt Bees at all. Any other other options?

Hi Jennie.

I really like a brand called, "Mother's Special Blend". There is a drawing of a pregnant woman on the bottle. It is made with all natural oils only- and no preservatives. It feels heavenly on your/your baby's skin! The scent is a very mild, natural scent (I agree that the Burt's Bees scent was too strong for me at times, too).

The ingredients are:

"Almond Oil, Pecan Oil, Coconut Oil, Cocoa Butter, Vitamin E"

I bought mine at a small, local natural food store. But I have also seen it advertised in magazines (maybe Mothering? not sure). If you do a web search I bet something will pop up.

HTH!

I was told at my prenatal class to avoid nut oils, and any fragrances (I think even pure essential oils). She suggested olive oil or grapeseed oil. They just soak in, and baby is so much more sensitive to any of the "extras" in most commercial lotions and creams.

And as for powder, of course, no talc, but just plan cornstarch - no J&J -type, which is basically cornstarch, plus who knows what...Actually, she said cornstarch is great for massages instead of oil (she's also a RMT), and that for changes, unless baby needs a barrier cream to protect an existing rash, to avoid creams and powders altogether.

And don't forget, after baby is born, just rub in the vernix around the creases - the best moisturizer!

I second this recommendation. I bought some at the health food store and I like it even more than olive oil. It has no scent (well a slight oil scent) and it's very light and super moisturizing.

Nut allergies are on the rise! I would avoid anything with a nut oil in it, my dd is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts & there is no way to tell if your baby will be allergic to them too.

Olive oil, vitamin E oil, avacado oil, flax seed oil, evening primrose oil & grapeseed oil are all good choices
