more momma cloth questions...

I finally ordered some cloth pads. I've been looking at them for months now. AF hasn't yet returned, so I still have some time left, but I don't want to get caught off guard, KWIM? DS uses cloth, so why shouldn't I?

Anyway, I ordered 2 regular and 1 super MOE pads with an extra insert for each one. So, that should give me 4 daytime and 2 nightime uses before washing.

I'd like to have a few different brands on hand to try, when the time comes. Does anyone have any favorites? I really want to have a couple of each brand I decide on, so I can give them a fair shake.

Also, how many should I buy? I figure I need at least twice as many. Is that about right?

And, looking ahead to the next babe. For post-partum use, I would just use overnight pads right? How many did you use for that time period? Did you use them in the hospital too or only once you got home? I want to use cloth for the next babe in the hospital (but since we'll have to bring our own this time, it'll be a lot of work, but we're planning on it). Would cloth for me too just be too much of a hassle? I figure I'll probably be there for about 3 days.

Thanks in advance!!!

I mostly use my keeper. But I also use homemade pads made from this pattern:

For postpartum, I used homemade pads I made by modifying the above pattern, and just plain flannel pads (with nothing to hold them in/ attach to underwear). The plain flannel works really well, the texture of the flannel keeps the pad from sliding around. I just sewed 6-8 flannel rectangles together. I'm not sure how this compares to the hospital pads, since my kids were born at home. But it worked for me

How absorbant are the moon pads? There prices are very reasonable. Do you have problems with leaking?

Sweet Cheeks New Moon pads are very very absorbant and very thin. When I bought mine they only sold one absorbancy and the web site stated that you could easily double up. My first AF post partum I found that I needed to do that. I love them though.

I've seen the Sweet Cheeks Moon Pads on Ebay so anyone interested in them might want to check there as well.

For postpartum, I've heard of mamas just using prefolded diapers- particularly the ones that the baby is too little for- they've already got a couple dozen on hand and they have a use when the PP period is over!

Personally, I've never been "together" enough to use cloth with a brand new baby- I usually use disposable pads, diapers, and plates for the first few weeks while getting settled in, then go back to my usual crunchy self a few months later. I did manage cloth diapers with my first (after the 1 packaged of newborn sposies was used up) but I still used disposables for myself. I only had one baby at the time, the washing machine was in my kitchen, and my Mom came to help for a couple weeks so she washed the diapers. When I had my second, the washer was downstairs and I was overwhelmed with 2 babies. When I had my 3rd, I had a dh who was "icked out" by the thought of cloth diapers. I put ds in cloth when he was 21mo (and the idiot was already out of the picture.)

I ordered from www.countrycuttins.com and have been using them for about a year now. They are really great! It is an AIO design that folds out for washing. They have held up really really well even though I don't have enough, wash them often and have hard water. And she is a great WAHM to deal with IMO.
