Handkerchiefs?

So, I want to start using Hankies instead of tissues (I am SO tired of spending money on things that I just throw away! So wasteful!) and I'm thinking that I just want to buy some fabric and cut it into large squares. No sewing or anything like that. I always feel 100% clueless regarding anything having to do with fabric! So I'm wondering:

Would my idea work? What kind of fabric would be best? Could I even just go buy some cheap-o flannely shirts at Salvation Army and cut them up? Any thoughts?

I love my hankies! I get vintage ones from flea mardets and thrift stores.

My first was a huge spiter-upper and we had tons of the flat (single layer) cloth dipers. They are now our hankies and work great!

Although flannel sounds super soft, go for it!

anything other than fleece will need to be sewn at the edges or it will unravel.

I cut up squares of flannel and use that. I didn't finish the edges, and it does unravel in the wash, but I could care less how it looks. And by the time it gets to the point where it's all unravelled I probably would have been ready to throw it out anyway.

Koala- Did you use Pinking Shears? Wouldn't that slow the unraveling process? I think I have a plan, ladies!

Pinking shears would be grand! (And I never even thought of it at the time. Duh.) I took the exceptionally easy/lazy way out and ripped strips of fabric.

Store bought napkins, hankies and bandanas also work well. We also use terry washcloths, because we have them around the house to use as diaper wipes, but I do find that they are rough on the nose.

I have been really thinking of doing this too. btw we never had kleenex growing up, always hankies!

using bandanas sound really good to me! I think I may just try that.
