Dye-ing flats, pfs

I have some old flats and prefolds that I'm using as burp cloths. What do I dye them with- Rit? Do I have to wash them seperately? I don't want them to bleed on ds's face or on my clothes when they get wet.

TIA!

DO NOT USE RIT!!! It will bleed forever!! The best thing to use is procion dyes...

They have starter kits too.

So, I just order a started kit? I have unbleached prefolds. Will it work on thoses?

Yes. It comes with everything you need.

Remember that unbleached PFs will effect the final color, so take that into account.
Many craft/fabric stores i.e. Joanns sell the same kits you find at Dharma, which are by Jacquard(a producer/distributor of all sorts of dyes). Procion dyes are a class of fiber reactive dyes.
A similar product is Dylon Cold Water dyes which are also fiber reactive dyes and work in about the same way as Procion dyes. I have never used them so I cannot say they are better than the tie-dye kit, but they are an option. Quite honestly, procion dyes are pretty simple themselves

Good Luck!

I was figuring that would effect color. But I was thinking about getting some darker colors. I just have not decided what to do. Thanks for the advice.

just be sure they have been washed well prior to dyeing, becuase the unbleached have a lot of the oils still in them.
