whats your stance on it??? i heard that the FDA considers it a toxic waste! : so i'd like to hear the pros & cons....
I don't know all the pros and cons but to be extra careful I am using a xylitol gel 3 times a day on my 21 mo dd's teeth. She has some staining/cavities on her top 4 front teeth and the gel seems to be helping to keep it from getting worse. I got the xylitol gel at a health food store and it is supposed to be safe and natural. I am interested to see the replies you get to this post.

ok people...I guess i've just been lazy and come here so others can do the research for me, so here you go, my own research:

"Did you know? flouride

* The vast majority of western Europe has rejected water fluoridation.

* The fluoride chemical added to water is an unprocessed, industrial waste-product from the pollution scrubbers of the phosphate fertilizer industry.

* A growing body of evidence indicates that water fluoridation is both ineffective and unnecessary.

* Fluoride's 'benefits' are primarily topical, not systemic. Thus, there is no need to swallow fluoride.

* Two-thirds of US communities, when given the chance to vote, have voted against fluoridation. Over 60 US communities have rejected water fluoridation since 1999.

* Excessive exposure to fluoride has been linked to health problems, including arthritis, hip fracture, hypothyroidism, cancer, male reproductive problems, and brain disorders.

* Children are receiving an excess of fluoride today, not a "deficiency". There is a need to reduce, not increase, current exposures.

* As a result of excess exposure to fluoride, near-epidemic numbers of children are developing dental fluorosis (a poisoning of tooth-forming cells)."

I wonder if this could be a factor in the fact that Willow and a few other kids around Lubbock some problems with their teeth. Willow has two teeth that are soft. The enamil has just crumbled and she's going to need surgery soon. (Unless someone can give me some reasons why she shouldn't...feel free to PM me)...They had thought it was due to a fever..and now they're saying it's genetic. DH and I have great teeth...and it's effecting more kids than is coincidence....

As an answer to the question... I had always thought that flouride (in moderation) was beneficial. I'm beginning to believe otherwise.

Willowsmom, this could be due to many factors, i'd search it on the internet...but for now, try buying a really good water filter, or buy spring water, tap water has chlorine and other nasty stuff in it...also, go to your natural food store and see what a suppliment person there might recommend. Do you have a power plant or other hazardous something or other in your area?? I will research this some more cause I'd hate to see your baby have to go thru a surgery!

Thanks willow83 and uccomama for the links. There is no doubt in my mind that her teeth and my friends' children's teeth is due to an environmental factor. Unfortunately, Willow's two teeth, in question, have already crumbled to non existent and she has to have the surgery...It sucks. I've questioned the dentist out here..and even contacted my childhood dentist with whom I have a wonderful rapport...Having her teeth open like they are, it could cause or start a host of other problems...decaying the other teeth, infections, causing problems with her permanent teeth.

One of the things that infuriates me more than anything...I take VERY good care of my daughter's teeth. She doesn't get sugary foods or formula or bottles of juice or candy...and yet...her teeth are messed up. Not the kid down the street who's 30lbs and 1 year old. Not the kid down the street who walks around with cupcakes and juice and crap. Oh well...what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?
I know I'm doing what I need to for my daughter's teeth. I guess at this point it's out of my hands and I'm not at fault...perhaps. lol

Thanks again, ladies. Sorry to get all rambly and pity party.
