Are my Thrift Store buys good for CD's? (and other questions)

Okay - I bought two large robes - 100% cotton, terry cloth.
I also bought 1 large very nice fleece shirt.

I was thinking I could use the material and recycle them to make some CD's, but do you all know if this is a good idea or not? Anyone else into recycled clothing CD making? I was thinking that the robes would be nice and soft for the part that goes on the bum...but I wasn't really thinking about the fact that it may not suck some of the moisture away from those tender little parts when I bought them. maybe I'm just going to have to use it for inside layers??

I'm trying to create a stash for my DS (:LOL..I just fixed this..it did say DH..just had to share) and NB on the way. I was also thinking about making some prefolds out of DH's old T-shirt stash as well...he's got like a million! And I was hoping to make a nice cover w/ that fleece shirt...(its purple w/some designs, would look cute on my NB baby girl), fleece should be okay, right? I also just read the post about the sewing machine maybe not being able to sew through the layers of the PF...wouldn't that go for pretty much any diaper that you are trying to make absorbant?

Anyone use any other fabric other than PUL as an outer to a AIO?

Also...any suggestions on a good cover pattern?

TIA!

I'm also interested in the answers to your questions.

I am going to try my first sewing project tonight, actually... a wet bag. I couldn't find any PUL or similar fabric at Joann's when I searched ages ago, but I did find something I'm hoping will work well: believe it or not, PLEATHER! LOL It is slick and water repellent on one side, and knit like fabric on the other. I poured a little water on the slick side and it didn't soak in, so I'm very interested to see if this will work. I'll keep you posted.

All of my diaper-making is done with recycled clothing for fabric. It sounds like your thrift shop score is a good one! The only thing I can think of that might not work is the fleece shirt for use as a cover - the fleece might not be thick enough. But then again, it might, so you'll have to use your judgement on that one!
I have lots of free info about sewing recycled-fabric diapers - see my sig, the link is on my links page! Have fun sewing!

Thats funny. I was actually wondering about using pleather today...if anyone tried it at least. But I was thinking of the pleather part on the outside..kind of like a catwomen CD...of course that really WOULD defeat the purpose wouldn't it?? lol I'm interested to see how it works out for you!!

I also searched Joanns for some PUL...no avail. I think they only have material for sewing "normal" stuff...like quilts and curtains! (Oh, and I guess clothes too)

ETA: UG...this baby is EATING my brain I think. I just realized you are making a wet bag with the pleather! That will definately be stylin...I like the idea!

As for the fleece not being thick enough...ug! You're probably right....it was pretty, and cheap though! No major loss! I can try anyway and just toss the idea if it doesn't work out also!

Thanks!

maybe the fleece shirt is a micro fleece and you can use it as liners in your diapers to wick the moisture away from babys bum

There are plenty of places to order pul online and even something called pro-care which is alot like pul and better prices.. I believe that is at www.wazoodle.com I bought many different types of diaper fabric and now know what I really like- sherpa!! Its so soft and pretty absorbant. I also like suede cloth on the inners to keep my babys bottom dry! Good Luck and have fun- post pics owhen you finish some!!

I actually did buy the pleather with the intention of trying it out for diapers... I'm just such a sewing novice that I figured I'd better start with something it would be hard to mess up, a wet bag...!

Lately I have been getting t-shirts from thrift stores and clearing out our old shirts from drawers to make prefolds. I also get wool sweaters from thrift stores to make longies and diaper covers. I have never thought of looking at the robes. Great idea!

I am new to cd-ing- cd my new ds and switching dd to cloth. I can't afford to buy all those cute diaps/covers, so I figured I'd make them. I am recycling TONS of stuff I already have- old flanel sheets, rec. blankets, towels, etc. I did but some ultrex for covers, and I am making AIO's with blanket wt. fleece, using the fleece for the cover, and flanel on the inside. I am using a nothing-special sewing machine, I just bought heavy duty needles and I sew through as many as 4 layers sometimes!
I'm interested to see what others are doing!

Oh, soccerchic...do you just cut up the sweaters and sew them? Don't they come unraveled? That's a great idea, using old sweaters!

i'm so jealous of those of you who are using thrift store clothes for dipes. i've pretty much given up. been to every thrift store in town and none of them have clothes cheap enough to make it worth my while. i do better buying new fabric by the yard than paying two bucks for a tee shirt. i'm so frustrated!!! and the cheapest wool sweater i have come across was $8. too expensive to experiment with. that being said, i have paid the big bucks for a few thrift store things and they made gorgeous dipes. ds is wearing a fitted now with the outer made out of a striped cotton tee and it's sooo cute!

I love thirft store receiving blankets for fitteds and Goodwill sells them 12 for a $1!! Sometimes trift stores will sell t-shirts and other items that they can't resell (stained or holey) by the garbage bag for around $3. It never hurts to ask!!
