Yes, I read that book years and years ago, when I first was introduced to paganism. THe thing I remember from it was how wonderful it would be to live in such a utopian society as the one she described in San Francisco, when the rest of the world was a mess. I've always yearned for such a community.

Starhawk, as you may know, is a major figure in the wiccan/pagan world. She's written the classic "Spiral Dance," which is a staple for all pagan libraries. I think The Fifth Sacred THing is her only novel. I highly recommend all of her writings.

The Fifth Sacred Thing is a great book! It is the book I buy for my friends. Actually, she did write another novel called Walking to Mercury, which is a prequel to the Fifth Sacred Thing. It is a good read but not as powerful as I found the Fifth Sacred Thing. I also love the Spiral Dance, and found the Pagan Book of Living and Dying and Circle Round (pagan parenting book) to be very helpful. I think the thing I like most about The Fifth Sacred Thing is that it shows that there is an alternative to the way we are living. Sometimes I feel very pessimistic about our future, so it is nice to have an image of hope.

She also has Walking to Mercury that I know of. Both it and 5th Sacred Thing are in my TBR (to be read) pile.

i feel the same way farmer momma.. its nice to have hope that one day we will have a community, a utopia like that... although it isnt perfect, its better than having an evil government dictate what we do..

anyone have any other books with similar content that they reccomend?
