Dumb question, I guess .. but I just have dry hair and I usually wash it every day with Finesse cuz I love getting fresh whiffs of, well, niceness. ROFL!!!
I totally agree with LoriG. I have a lot of hair but it's fairly fine, and I notice when I try to wash less than every day, it gets oily at the scalp immediately. And yes, I have gone months in an every-other-day regimen for it to "balance out" and it STILL felt greasy on the second day. Going *three days* is laughably out of the question. At three days I could slick it back and it would stay there, Braveheart-style (and yes for clarification I am referring to the stinky Scotsmen, not the beeeauutiful French queen in the film). ;-)

To get back on topic. WHAT kind of natural hair care products are enjoyed by ladies with fine and normal-to-oily hair? I have been using Aveda products and they seem to make things shiny and great-smelling. I also notice a cold-water rinse does wonders. Aveda is pricey tho' and I'm not sure what I think of their company ethics.

It seems like the success of these regimens TOTALLY depends on one's personal chemistry, hair (fine or coarse, dry or oily etc.), skin (for instance I start breaking out on my neck if my hair gets too oily, yuck!), whether you use hair-care products), and the tolerance level for greasy hair.

I agree there seem a lot of advantages to washing hair less frequently. It really does save time to take a shower without getting your hair wet. For time's sake I have found washing my hair at night also saves time when you need it - in the AM when the kiddos are up I only have to wash the face, pits and crotch and I'm on my way (a friend of mine calls this a "Whore's Bath", haha!).

Blackie are you talking no poo or less poo? When I was using shampoo I couldn't miss a day either because my hair would grease up the day after I washed it. I mean smelly, itchy and if I scratched I got stuff under my nails. That would be the evening of the day after I shampooed I stopped using shampoo and now I can go 2 or 3 days without showering before I *start* to get itchy and smelly (and even skipping 3 days I've never come close to what I described above). Not that I want to skip showers. I love my hot, steamy showers :LOL But with a toddler sometimes it happens (less and less as he gets older though!). So shampooing every other day is just not the same as not using shampoo at all.

edited to add I also have fairly fine hair that leans to greasy. And my tolerance level for greasiness is ZERO :LOL I would not have kept this up if it didn't work well for me. I can't stand the smell or feel of greasy hair.

Lori, you can use essential oils if you want your hair to smell of something other than hair Just put some oils in a cup of water and rinse with that. To be honest, what I miss most about shampoo is the lather. Not enough to start using it again, but sometimes I miss it.

verrrrry interesting...

OK, i am intrigued by BOTH ideas... both shampooing LESS often, but also, HOW to get to a place where you don't need shampoo at all. the idea of washing my hair with only BS and a vinegar rinse does not appeal to me. but yeah, i can definitely see why soaps/shampoos are stripping one's hair... isn't there some sort of middle ground where you can wash with something gentle AND fragrant... not too "hippie-ish" but not shampoo either?

also, "OCM" = ??

OCM=oil cleansing method. I'll try to find the link to the discussion for you - very interesting

Have any of you who don't want to go totally no poo used a shampoo bar? It's a bar of soap made specifically for hair so it's very gentle, uses hair loving oils like wheat germ, jojoba etc.. and lots of essential oils for the smell good factor I'm working on one right now and would love to hear any experiences with them.

I have a Burts Bees shampoo bar I've been using about 1x week. I do use the baking soda every other day, but after a week or so my hair doesn't "feel right", and the shampoo bar seems to bring it back into balance. Perhaps I'm not working the BS into my roots well enough, or not using enough of it, but I have a very thick, heavy feeling to the roots of my hair after a few days. I LOVE the fact that I can lather my hair with it (I really miss that about the baking soda!) and it doesn't seem to strip my hair badly.
