Vitamin K question?

Hi everyone, I haven't posted here in a while. I have been wrestling with the vitamin K shot in my head for a few weeks. I am due to deliver in 3 weeks and have tried to search MDC but it is impossible since vitamin K is not a word!!!

How many of you are giving the shot? How many of you are supplementing with alfalfa, dark greens, etc.? Did any of you have a blood test to measure your level? I read about oral vitamin K as well which seems a better option than an injection. Help me find out info. Thanks!!

Our naturopath/ birth attendant only does the oral vitamin k. i don't agree with jabbing a newborn baby for what is really a very rare problem. They just slip a dropper alongside the nipple as the baby feeds.

Raven had to be on IV antibiotics because of hospital policy, so I had them put the vit k in that way.

I am supplementing right now with alfalfa juice concentrate pills (ds and dh call them my "guinea pig food") From what I've read, vitamin K can build up in your breast milk through supplements and can also pass to the baby before birth.

We had a homebirth with ds. We gave him oral vit. K, which was fine. We'll do it again this time, too, if necessary.

Ask a local midwife and/or childbirth educator for information/studies. Our midwife gave us several articles included with her initial information packet.

good luck. susan

I am birthing in a birth center with a midwife. I had asked her about vitamin K and she says she gives the shot. I am leaning against doing it unless it is necessary. I remember reading about when baby has their natural level they should have. I just don't remember when.
I do take a high quality prenatal multi. and extra calcium both of which have high levels of vitamin K in it. I did start alfalfa but kind of tapered off taking it. Thanks for your replys.

We're doing it. I have battles I'm willing to fight and battles I'm not. I haven't come across anything so far to make me think that getting Vit K is dangerous or like getting a vax, but I'm open to new info so will : a bit here too if that's OK.

Since I haven't been able to decide, I finally told my midwife to use her judgement. She knows much more about it than I do and I just really couldn't decide. So, my baby will probably end up getting it, but I'm okay with that.

I'm w/ Periwinkle opcorn My baby will be getting it, too, unless I can see a major reason not to. I don't think of it the same way I do a vaccination.
