I'm finding the books really hard to read. In my case I think it is better to have seen the movies first cause otherwise I would be so lost in the books. There is just so many names and places that I would be endlessly lost. But since I've seen the movies a million times I'm familiar with names and places.

And I now am boring, lame and geeky WhooHoo! :LOL

Okay, here is my theory on the origin of hobbits (I can't believe I have thought long and hard about this....I love you guys!).

I wonder if they are a mix of the three races? Their love of the earth and plants, as well as their ability to walk quietly and undisruptively, and their cute little ears, from the elves. They obviously have some human qualities, too -- language, for one. And their stature, thier tradition of living underground, and their steadfastness and endurance from dwarves?

What do you think?

I'm not alone! I'm not alone! There are more like me........

My 5th grader did his last book report on Lord of the Rings and the one before that on Tolkien! Of course, I stood over him the whole time. I'm such a crappy mom!

Interesting theory!!! I'd say they also got their interest in eating all the time, and physical comforts in general from Man as well!!

I guess while everyone is confessing... I also must confess I find the books to be a tougher than average read. I don't really like the style Tolkien writes in. (And ok, I also HATE his poetry -- as a poet, I find it really annoying, for the most part).

So, what I do is skim a lot.... makes for faster reading, but also, I find sometimes I have to go back and look up things. Luckily, I have crazy-good reading comprehension skills (crazy-good means better than 98% of the US population who takes the GRE). So, going back and looking things up has always been a forte of mine (I can find things on a page really easily -- boy did that come in handy in university! :LOL)

The Similion came for me last week at the library, and I still am waiting to get into it It looks tough, but fun

Confession

I have never read the poems and songs in the book... It's horrible!! Everytime I read them, I tell myself that I will take it slow and read everything but I get so anxious to get to my favourite parts that I tend to skip the poems and songs.

I want to read and love the poems and songs, and only then will I be the geek I strive to be

I do that too. I read Watership Down like 5 times before I ever read the folk tales strewn throughout it!

reading out loud

For all you people who are having a heard time with Tolkein's language...I highly recommend reading it aloud. AND reading the poems/songs. I know I know, most of them are Beowulf lite...I can recognize the rhythms of old English (or before) type poetry I studied in high school.

I had read the books before and loved them (but I DO tend to stop and reread passages out loud to myself anyway!!). But reading them to Del has made the books come alive. I think that in that case, it helps to have the child have an image from the film to guide her. Jim Trelease, the Read-Aloud Handbook author, suggests doing voices and singing songs and all that...I NEVER tried to sing the songs before, but dd insists. She'll get all excited if she sees verse on the page. I just try to guess what the song would sound like. I also use Billy and Dom's voices for the hobbits and Rhys-Davies voice for the dwarves.

Now I want to find the old recording someone made of the songs, which dh says is out there...but I'm also afraid that I have been massacring them...

Mary, who really looks for any excuse to sing

Is anyone else not really excited about the Oscars because LOTR's isn't nominated for anything this year? :

Wish PJ would hurry up and make The Hobbit.
I'm in too! Though I don't generally have a lot of free time these days!! I don't think I can be a regular here.

Read Hobbit and all LOTR years ago, and Silmarillion 2-3 years ago... Have seen the movies an obscene number of times!

Me! Funny tho, cause as you know (or maybe don't know) I delayed seeing the movies until this year, so I hadn't seen them at the time they swept the Oscars! : :

So where is everyone it is toooo quiet here....Off to find a trivia quiz or something to liven things up....

BTW, TB, ever consider making THIS your home thread?!?!?!?

Hey everybody! It's been crazy here... we're waiting to hear whether my dh got the job of (our) his dreams and on Sunday we got into a minor car accident. So I haven't started the Simi-(however it's spelled) yet.

Hmmm... the Oscar question. I haven't had too much of an interest in the Oscars for awhile, really. I mean, I was rooting for LotR everytime, but pretty much knew in advance they'd only give it one Best Picture. The Oscars just seems like so much hype to me now... and even the dresses (the best part) aren't as cool. I'm vaguely considering getting my cable shut off and not even watching them this year! (I'm contemplating going no-TV, and only using it as a DVD/ video player).

Wow. That was a totally off topic post! :LOL I'll try to get back on topic

I didn't really like the Hobbit when I read it as a teenager. I think I should go back and reread it. And I also think that reading the stories aloud -- with singing! -- is probably the best way to experience them Wish I had hobbitses of my own to read to... Ah, well. Someday. Meanwhile, maybe my dog would enjoy my reading about Tom Bombadil?

Nervous is the better word for me. I really wanted them to win last year so I was so nervous during telecast. I enjoy the Oscars, tho' I tivo it so I can fast forward through all the bs. What I will really miss is my hobbitses in tuxes (hey, that kind of rhymes!). They are just so adorable!!

alexisyael I'm glad you are okay! Even minor car accidents are such a pain - literally and figuratively.

Y'all have got to check out Viggo's new face-hamster. Don't worry, it's for a role so I don't think he's keeping it. Unless you like that sort of thing. For me, the image of him twirling it and sneering kind of ruins our sex life. :LOL Anyway, here'tis - Viggo's new look.
I think all mustaches should be BANNED!!!! UGH. That is one ugly face-hamster :Puke

Thanks, Kris. It *was* really annoying. The only good thing to come out of it is that our replacement car is a cool green love-bug I love the love-bug. And I love how my dh, when faced with the choice of the love-bug or the silver honda, said "no contest, gotta have the love-bug!"

I also miss the hobbiteses in tuxes... but I bet they'll be presenting this year (at least some of them).
