my daughter is almost 3 and we LOVE reading, she has quite a collection of books but we are always looking for more

we have a library trip coming up this week and i am looking for ideas....

right now our favorites seem to be Jan Brett (gotta love those pictures!!!!!), a Margeret Wise Brown bunny book and a few lift the flaps books (not awesome stories but not fluff ;-p)

what is everyone reading their young ones before bed (and during the day)?

DS & DD LOVE acting this book out! It is sooo funny. They are going to write & illustrate their own sequel--- "Don't let the pigeon drive the Semi."

We go through books FAST.

Right now DD & DP are reading the 3rd book in the Rats of NIMH series, but she is 6.

DD (6) and I are reading mary Poppins, and while we are enjoying it, we were surprised that the Mary in the book is the complete opposite of the one in the movie - she is very self-centered and snippy and not especially kind. She does make magical things happen, but that's just about the only similarity. And being that it is an old book, there was some horrifying racism in there that i had to think quick to change as I read aloud!

We're planning on reading The Indian In The Cupboard next.

Kate's favorites in no particular order are:

Any of the Yoko and Friends books by Rosemary Wells (Yoko, Mama Don't Go, Read me a story, Doris' Dinosaur, etc.)

Click, Clack, Moo and Giggle, Giggle, Quack

any of the Junie B. Jones books by Barbara Park.

She also likes all of the Strega Nona books, Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, and any of the Lyle, Lyle Crocodile books.

at that age my daughter loved a book called the noo noo by Jill Murphy. It is the hilarious story of a baby Monster who doesn't want to give up its pacifier.
She loved it despite the fact she never had one!

DS (2) is currently in love with

Hand Hand Fingers Thumb
The Day The Babies Crawled Away (great silhouette illustrations) Peggy Rathman
It's Snowing! Olivier Dunrea
Night Cars Teddy Jam
Pete's a Pizza William Steig

We love Margaret Wise Brown, too. Our faves by her are:
Two Little Gardeners
Give Yourself To The Rain (poetry for the very young)
Sailor Dog
Pussy Willow
The Diggers

DS always loves anything by Eric Carle; his faves are Slowly SLowly Said The Sloth; Animals, Animals; and the Very Hungry Caterpillar

He really likes ALphabet Adventure by Bruce and Audrey Wood, as well as the Napping House by them

Jamberry by Bruce Degen and
Hondo and Fabian by Peter McCarty are long time faves

Kiss Good Night by Anita Jeram

He likes Donald Crews...especially Freight Train

OH, and there are LOTS of Curious George books; ds LOVES these.

And ds really likes non fiction picture books, in just about any subject. He brought home stuff about earthworms, butterflies, and cowboys this week.
3 is definitely not too young to let them loose in the stacks to make their own selections. I also pick up stuff for him myself on topics I know he is interested in (anything about trucks or construction equipment, for example, is always a hit).

Lately he wants me to read him longer stories. He has really enjoyed all of Winnie the Pooh, The Wizard of Oz, the Magic TreeHouse books, and Stuart Little was a BIG hit. We are reading Charley and the Chocolate Factory now.

I don't recognize the name Jan Brett; we'll check that out.

what a nice mix of books we now have a big library list

we saw a Graeme Base book the other day at the book store that looked interesting (didn't get it though) has anyone read his stuff before? we have a couple on hold at the library

thanks

Yes, we love Graeme Base. We own Animalia (the best one IMO) and we read it over and over. It's fun to find the boy hidden in each picture and we love listing the things that begin with each letter.

The Waterhole is a beautiful book of his, too, and you can spend a lot of time finding the hidden animals on each page. Great environmental message in that one, too.

We LOVE anything by Virginia Lee Burton, Maurice Sendak, Eric Carle, Robert Mckloskey, Jan Brett, the list goes on and on, but these are some of our favorite authors.

Also Dr. Seuss is a huge hit in our house.

My kids also love Shel Silverstein, but your 3 year old may not enjoy it as much yet.

A sweet, funny story that we've been reading a lot lately and that DS loves is My Monster Mama Loves Me So by Laura Leuck. (It's about this baby monster who knows his mama loves him because she does things like "comb the cobwebs from my bangs and makes sure that I brush my fangs" -- the kinds of things that three year olds can relate to!) Also The Adventures of Taxi Dog by Debra Barracca. Both are illustrated by Mark Buehner and we love his work!

We have been reading The Rainy Day (an usborne book)
and the amazing illustrations are part pastel, part drawing.
I like this one as much as dd does - granted is timely
for us with all the rainy weather.

Also Abuela and The Colors of the Earth are nightly books too.

Reading is also an important part of my DD's night-time routine.. She really loves: The Bear Snores On, The Bear Wants More, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Goodnight Moon, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Big Sister, Little Sister, Green Eggs and Ham, etc...

The Bear Snores on (and the books of that series) are WONDERFUL...they are fun to read and have such sweet illustrations. I really recommend those... my niece, who is 5, loves these as much as my 3 year old and 1 year old....heck, I love listening to DH read them, even.
