DC, thanks so much for your posts!

Just want to let you know... I have a friend at my son's preschool who has 2 Huskies for her daughters. She bought a minivan * specifically * because she knew they would fit and had the tether. So parents are shopping with safety in mind and car manufacturers need to remember that.

I think the problem is that most parents are just not aware that 5pt harnass is safer. I recently became aware of it. Yeah, $250 x 2 is a lot, but I can afford so I will be purchasing the Britax Husky for my almost 5 year old shortly. Only 2 families in our preschool class (over 50) have it. I just think it's ignorance on the part of the parents. Parents just don't know.

I have a Toyota Sienna mini-van. My local total child safety store says it will fit, no problem.

Where is that quote about Newton's law and force of impact? What thread? Did you post that??? I need to show my DH.

DC ... I have a couple of questions for you ... (you are awesome for answering all of these, btw )

First, about side impact air bags ... I have a 2004 Mazda 6 Wagon, which I love. It has some kind of side air bags in the rear. They are mounted on the vertical pillar (to the roof) that goes between the back seat windows and the rear cargo windows (the side windows in the wagon "trunk"). Are those likely side curtain or just SI, or do you need more info? I'm curious and dh has the car out so I can't go look at my book/specs since all of that is in the car ... And, if they're the bad air bags, what on earth do I do when we have a second child in the next year or so? Getting another car is probably out of the question ...

Second ... (and I am so ahead of myself with this question) ... we are thinking about ttc within the next year or so. So when baby #2 comes along, ds will be around 2.5 years old. Currently, at almost 15 months, he's about 30" and about 25 lbs. but still uses the lowest harness setting. He's rear-facing in the middle rear seat in a Britax Roundabout (since that's the only thing that fit in my old car). I plan to keep him in the Roundabout as long as possible and put a new baby in his Graco Snugride until the new baby outgrows the Snugride. At that time, I think I want to put the new baby in the Roundabout and move ds into something that he'll not outgrow weight-wise for awhile. But I realize that new baby and he will both be in seats for quite awhile, so, as I understand it, we should ideally get him a higher weight limit seat (so he has the 5-point harness) until he outgrows that seat weight wise and then move him into a booster (on the theory that by the time his future sibling outgrows the Roundabout, he should be ready for a booster and future sibling can move into the higher weight limit seat)? Is this question even coherent? :LOL I'm just trying to plan for this $$$$, as I don't want money to be an object in keeping the kiddos as safe as possible.

Thanks!

Hi,

This is what I found on Cosco's recalls...(and other manuf. too)

http://www.hsrc.unc.edu/pubinfo/child_recall1.htm#Cosco

I do not specifically see the Omega Elite listed, however look at the model numbers to be sure.

Well...haven't been able to get info on pricing yet OR the estimated release date.
I will keep at it and post back when I find out.

Hey Tanya...your quite welcome. I feel it is my responsibility to use the training I have to help educate. That is my goal. There is so much mis-information out there and couple that with the fact that things can change daily with regards to car seat safety and best practice. So to keep everyone updated, verify correct seat installation, and to educate new parents is our goal and ends up being full time.

Honestly, there have been so many threads where I have answered the same question over and over, I have lost track of the ones where Newton's theory of motion was mentioned.
But it is simply this:

Weight X speed = restraining force

A 10 pound infant X 30 mph = 300 pounds of force needed to restrain him/her in a wreck.

Any other ?'s, please post.

Amy,

Here is the thread where air bags and their differences were discussed.
http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=241656

I would recommend that you read your vehicle owner's manual for specifics as to the type of air bags you have. If your DH has the car still, then I would go to the manufacturer's website and call their 1-800 CS number and give them the make, model and year of your car and find out.
If you do discover you have non-curtain side air bags, then you can fill out a form, send it in to NHTSA, get approval, and go to your dealership with the form and get them turned off. However, this would mean that anytime you transport someone not in a safety seat in those positions, they will not be protected by the side air bags system. Some manuf. install an on/off switch...others just turn them off and to turn them back on you will need to go back to the dealership. Also...SOME MANUFACTURERS will not turn them off for you. They consider it to be a liability and will not touch them. In that case you will need to contact NHTSA for help.
As for baby # 2 and how it will affect seat choices...if you have time to save the $ for the seat I would recommend Britax's Marathon or Wizard. But keep in mind the size of the vehicles you will need to install the bigger seat in. Not only does Britax have the high weight limit utilizing the 5 point harness, but it is also a convertible which means it can Rearface and forward face. Keep you kiddo rearfacing for as long as the seat's weight limit allows. In both seats I suggested, the weight limit is 33 pounds rearfacing which is nice.

The Cosco Apex I referenced as the OT of this thread does not have a release date yet. However, by the time you have babe # 2, this one may be on the market and it is rumored to be cheaper than Britax but still allowing us the high weight limit in a 5 point harness.
