pull my finger

how important is humor in your parenting style? does D-W/H get mad when you do "gross" things like have your kid pull your finger then flatulate? or have a burping contest? DW often groans at my behavior but admits seeing the kids fall off thier chairs in peals of laughter is one of the many joys of parenting.
sorry if this thread is too flippant, but the polls were getting too serious 4 me.

As long as we don't have company, stuff like that is fine. You should hear my 8 year old dd when she starts farting - she could take off if she had wings!

I am curious to see how this thread developes. My dd is 3.5 and my dh and 21 yr old dBIL (who lives with us) are huge toilet humor guys.: SOme times it makes me nuts, but dd finds it hysterical. I guess most is okay. HOWEVER, when dd came up to me the other day with her pants around her ankles, bends over, and 'talks' with her butt (seen Ace Ventura Pet Detective? "May I ass you a few questions": ) then I had to put my foot down. God love em all

the thought of that image made me laugh (i have not seen most jim carrey movies), but i too would would say that was crossing over from gentle rank humor to bad taste. one of our fave's is when someone passes some partcularly oderous gas, the whole family starts into the " you did it, no you did it , no mommy did it" till we all get down to saying it was the baby (20 mos) who is so glad to be included that he'll admit to anything.

almost-5 yo ds has learned to say "thanks for sharing that" when someone farts - this response has me falling off my chair

really toilet humour pales for me after a while... quite a short while... but remember it's all "fresh" for the kids - as long as they don't do it in front of grandma

Humour is a constant in our house. We are alsways doing silly things, and yes, there are lots of potty jokes. Of course, the level of humour at any given time depends what we are doing or watching. Days when dad has watched a South Park episode, well, it can be pretty bad. It also varies depending on what company we have. Some people are worse than others. And I am certainly no angel

Oh, I forgot to mention that all I know I learned from my dad who learned from his dad. I think it is genetic.

Believe me, with three sons ages 5-11 (and their friends who seem to always be around our house ) we have more than our fair share of gross/bodily function humor. I am actually much worse (better?) about instigating it than my dh is. Dh just rolls his eyes at us most of the time. I guess I was destined for sons!

Humor is a (especially fart jokes) BIG part of our house. My stepkids learned sarcasm once they met me - along with all the gross bodily function jokes. MY dh has dubbed me Queen of the OBN (odd bodily noise). We have also stressed when is the wrong time to let one rip. (My 12 yo SDS can rip farts like a truck driver - I cant figure out how that much gas gets into one rather petite girl!)

I think that humor can be a very important tool also in the home. We use that humor as a way to open conversations with the kids and lets them know that we are open to talking about "embarassing" (as they would term it) stuff. As ours have gotten older (now 12 yo girl and 15 yo boy) and the potty humor and the kids have matured (if potty humor can mature?) it helps us open conversations into topics (like drugs, sex, mestruation, etc) that could be a little odd to bring up out of the blue. (remember those "Son/Daughter, I want to have a talk with you" conversations?) I think too becuase they can laugh about so many bodily functions and other situations that the feel far more at ease discussing it with us (and seriously discussing this topics - not only jokes).

I have to say I fell off my chair reading these posts - emmaline I love your ds response!

So keep up the potty/bodily function humor! Everyone needs a good laugh!

Oh please don't get me started......

Before dh and I were married he and my future stepkids used to get the biggest laughs at my dad, who farted shamelessly. Of course I grew up with that and as a teen it grossed me out big time, so it took me a while to get to the point where I could laugh about it.

So now I have a dd (age 3) who announces proudly "I farted!" when she lets one rip. Dh encourages this sort of behavior, and our family joke is "There goes an SR71 Blackbird!" after ds's favorite military airplane video. After dh passes gas, of course. My reply is that I'm more of a Stealth bomber...:

I saw one of those hidden video shows once that had some tape of guys sweeping. Every single one stuck the broom between his legs and did a little "thrusting" dance. Irresistible apparently. I was reminded of this this past weekend when my 27 mo son stuck one of those foam pool noodles between his legs and proudly said, "PENIS!" :LOL Was it my imagination or was there a little pelvic thrust with that? I swear he didn't learn that at home, he was born that way.

Thanks for starting this thread! What a crack up! Ah, the barking spiders! As long as they don't have bad breath-we're fine! I was just teasing dh last night that when he farts he imbeds them into the mattress whereas when I poot, I raise my bum into the air to be enjoyed by all! We teased that he embeds his for later enjoyment!! And then there are the cornback rattlers that he leaves in the pot! And the boneless peanut speckled trout we sometimes find! SPOOKY! TOO FUNNY! My dh is the king of stink! He says I'm playing my love trumpet when he hears me belt out a tune & always comments on the tone! What a weirdo! This kind of humor is so important! We never miss a moment to surprise each other! FIRE IN THE HOLE! If you don't know what that means, if your are here, you figure it out real soon! :LOL :

I think its an important part of my role as a father for my kids to see humor in things like that.My daughter is 2 and when she toots she says......poop,and then laughs so hard I think she is going to pee!I think its cute.I think its in the privacy of your own home is fine.

DH and I have recently decided we need to stop yelling, "Good fart!" whenever DD lets a particularly loud one. She's ten months old and we didn't want her to pick up the habit. But now I'm reconsidering....

if you have ever coached gas out of your little one by pumping their legs against the stomache you may dig the song i made up that still cracks ds up when he hears it

(in tempo to the leg pumps).

fart and fart and fart all day
we love to fart our gas away
farting is our greatest joy
'cause we're a gasssy little boy

Familyman - ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!

Is that sung to "Camptown Races" or the "Can-Can Song"? I love it!

We are always trying t get our son to say in English or in German, "Excuse Me" when he belches/burps. One day things were particularly intense at home, so I taught DS a substitute phrase - but only for use at home. The next time DS burped, his father said on cue, "What do you say . . . . ???" To which DS responded absolutely perfectly with great poise and flair - arms out in Shakseperean dramatic stance, "'Tis better to belch the belch and bear the shame, than to squelch the belch and bear the pain!"

DH -

It was perfect!!! Laughter is what gives life it's true joy!! And God gave us such funny things to laugh about - farts and belches are natural humbling jokes!
