Breast Feeding bib

The bib itself is kinda cute, but what the person says makes me angry.

I can't tell you how many times I have heard that you should give up breastfeeding when the baby gets teeth. I was just explaining to a co-worker the other day that one cannot breastfeed and bite at the same time. I don't know if she was convinced!

There are so many people that tell me I'm brave for nursing my dd who got teeth at 3 months old.

OH I hate that. I bought prenatal vitamins one day, the clerk looked at them and asked if I was pg, I said no, we're nursing. She paused and looked at ds (then about, oh I don't know, over a year I guess) and looked back at me and said, "You're nursing HIM?? Doesn't he have teeth??"

Blech!!

What a disgusting disservice to new nursing moms. My two and a half year old has everything but her last set of molars, and she's never used me as a chew toy, thanks.

Gag.

I must be the only one who thinks it's a cute bib.

The bib IS cute, I think. It's the text that the seller chose to accompany the bib that people (myself included) don't like:

"All I can say is, stop breast-feeding BEFORE they grow teeth! ouch... "

All I can say is, you don't suck with your teeth.
Sheesh.

I adore the bib. In fact, this person has a bunch of really cool stuff. I just don't like what the person said about it.

Why should she be? It's wholly untrue. Some babies bite while nursing because they can't or don't fully extend their tongue over their teeth; others bite down hard as they are drifting off to sleep or gnaw on the breast when they are experiencing teething pain.

I whole heartedly agree that it's an awful misconception that women should stop nursing when their babies get teeth. I've breastfed both of mine past the eruption of teeth and endured my share of biting.

I think it does women a grave disservice to gloss over problems one might experience while breastfeeding. Claiming that breastfeeding babies don't bite is dishonest. I'm, well, speechless. I think minimizing the issues women might face while breastfeeding makes them more likely to give up if they face problems and less likely to seek and find help.

If your child/children didn't bite, please consider yourself very, very fortunate but please don't tell other women that it can't happen.

Thank you,
Sarah

My dd has bit me before, but I would never stop breast feeding because of it and that's what this person was suggesting. I love her too much to do that.

Um, yeah, my daughter most certainly CAN bite while breastfeeding. I have the bruises to show. She's my first biter, of three, and there have been many nights when I've been jolted out of a peaceful sleep by her razor-sharp teeth. She's thirteen months and we're still going strong, no plans to stop, but babies can, and do, bite while nursing.

well, I have had two nasty little biters and I used that experience to figure out what worked to help others. So, it can be painful, but once again, like most things in breastfeeding, it's about educating. I have also heard such negative things about biting and having to quit, nothing like more scare stories, huh? Lets see, they start when you get pregnant, continue while your nursing, and then people give you predications about how bad teens are, etc, etc. Why can't us women, when are complete strangers to someone, just smile and say, How nice, or something? I would never dare say some of the things people off the street have said to me!

Funny story: when my daughter was still nursing at 2, somebody came up and asked how I did that will all those teeth, doesn't she bite? Well, I told them, she's doing pretty good, now if I only get my husband to stop biting so hard I'll have it made! She wasn't sure I was joking or serious, so she just kind of kept walking :LOL

I think what Harper meant is babies can NOT bite while actively sucking. Yes they can change the positioning and stop sucking and bite, but when actively sucking they can't. Trust me I know about being bitten while he's on my breast, and I can hardly notice the change in how he has my nipple in his mouth since he doesn't loose suction before he chomps! I'm sure she is not saying they don't bite your nipple at ALL just can not when in "suck" mode (but they sure can rub you raw with those top teeth!). Try it! Make your mouth in the shape you would if you were sucking water up a straw. Your bottom teeth are covered by your tounge. I don't know about your experience Sarah, I didn't know they could have a proper latch that didn't hurt and stimulated your supply without fully extending their tounges over the bottom teeth. Maybe you mean not actively sucking? Or maybe your babe has a unique latch...

Well, did you look at the rest of the clothing line? I don't think the seller is a bastion of political correctness.

Oh, and my dd has 7 teeth and never bites while nursing. She is an ankle biter, though. I thought that was just a saying all these years!

I have teeth marks in my boobs after every nursing. Let me tell you I know they are actively sucking and their teeth are definitely clamping down at the same time. I hate it, not a day goes by when I don't consider weaning cold turkey.

But there is really nothing I can do about it.

I think it is cute also!

BUT.....the discription following is TOTALLY DISGUSTING!!!

For that reason, I would NOT buy the bib! I am sure it is a joke, but for people who are uneducated on breastfeeding....they will take it to heart.
