I got a letter from the IRS- I am being audited!

Has anyone gone through this? I am freaking out- we used a tax preparer- but not an official one, and I know she cut some corners in terms of claiming mileage and stuff we didn't have proof of.

Has anyone gone through this? Any advice??

No advice. I have never been audited but I do wish you luck

Gather your stuff and make sure you know what you do (and do not) need a receipt for. A couple friends were audited a year ago (for something I TOLD THEM was illegal) and they just had to pay the extra money back.

At the same time the EIC was introduced, "they" made is so people in lower tax brackets are more likely to be audited than higher ones. How about fixing *that*!??!!

I have never been audited, but just be honest and if it's simple stuff that you "cut corners" in, say it was a mistake..

Thanks for the support- I just pulled our return for the 2003 year and there is a lot of stuff we don't have receipts for, that is for sure. Ugh. Just in time to deplete our savings before the baby is born. I TOLD my DH that if it sounds too good to be true, it IS.

I have never been through it but my uncle has. Just gather as many reciepts as you possible can. even if you haev to go back to teh store or something and get duplicats. Also you need to have the person that did them for you present cause they will haev specific question that maybe you can't answer.

Oh no! I don't have any experience or advice, but just want to wish you good luck and I hope that you can get everything worked out to a happy end.

unless you have documentation of whatever was allowable, you may have to face the possibility of compensating the IRS. Hopefully not a lot of money is involved!

my parents had a really, truly awful experience with the IRS audit which I won't go into now. however, this was 20 years ago when supposedly the IRS audits were notoriously crooked.

i think Seasons has excellent advice.
