recommend some books for my daughter!

she is 7 turning 8 and reads above grade level.

What can you recommend that is a little more difficult than Dr.Seuss and 5 sentences-per-page-books,not as dumb as hound in the hospital but not too difficult to follow storyline wise ?The problem is, she reads really really well but has only been living in the country for 13 months and often doesn't what words mean.

Help!

When my daughter was younger, she really liked the Magic Tree House series, by Mary Pope Osborne.

Also good are the Ramona books, by Beverly Cleary. I read Ramona when I was a young girl and loved them.

There's another series called Junie B. Jones that is really popular with kids your daughter's age (my dd still likes them, even though she's over the age for those books). They're by Barbara Park.

If she is into mysteries (not scary at all, more like detective stuff), try the Cam Jansen series, by David A. Adler. My dd loved those, too.

ETA: My dd liked the Boxcar Children, too, as the PP recommended.

That's all I can think of off hand... if I think of more, I'll post again.

Definitely the Magic Treehouse Series. My daughter (6 yo) has read them all several times. She also likes one of Osbourne's other series--Stories from the Odyssy. She likes the Droon books, but she has to only read a few of them at a time because she gets scared. Also the American Girls series (be careful, she will want very expensive dolls...).

We are reading the Rats of NIMH series right now, and she has asked for Alice in Wonderland next.

@SirPentor

I'l definately get the tree house series then for her.

Alice in wonderland is a great idea, too. Plus it has a special meaning to me and DH. I met him in a chat room and he was called Mad Hatter!

Also reading out loud to her is great fun too and will help her build her vocabulary. Kids can understand many books that are above their reading level if they are read to.

As a family we all (except my 4 yr. old son) loved reading "The Hobbit" and we actually got through the first two "Lord of the Rings" books and halfway through the last one before the details got to be too much for the kids and they lost interest. I love reading the "Little House" series to the kids too.

I second Beverly Cleary's books.

Right now my daughter (who is also almost 8) likes Jigsaw Jones (mystery books) and The Magic School Bus series. She also just finished reading Judy Moody Gets Famous and wants to read the others in that series.

We've also read The Cricket in Times Square together. One of my favorites from childhood.

YES!

I loved the TV serial, too, but I don't think you get it in america ( I don't mean the cartoon one)

I ordered Ronja Robber's daughter now, if need be I'll read it to her but I love the story!

Don't forget the "Little House" books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. A lot of folks don't know this, but they are intentionally written to get more difficult as the books progress and the chapters are individual stories within themselves. The first two would make great reading for a girl in the country.

I also have a fondness for the Paddington Bear books by Michael Bond...and the chapters are full stories.

Try Cynthia Rylant's "Henry and Mudge" easy readers, now in their 20th year, or the lesser know "Mr.Putter and Tabby" books. Both sets number in the twenties and are really darling. She also has a six book set about a group of girl cousins called "The Cobble Street Cousins" that I think are really, really pretty and fun to read.... if I had a ds who liked tea parties and dressing up and pretending, I would buy a set.

What languages does your dd speak / read in?
Did she have any favorite authors back home that
may be in translation for her?
Does she have any interest in poetry?

9yo dd says Roald Dahl is her favorite author.

Catwings by Ursula LeGuin (I think -- I have a cat sitting on my lap, so I can't go check the shelf). This is a series of 4 books.

The Little House series has expanded into several generations, written by various authors. You could spend hours and days on this series.

Really, the suggestions y'all have made have covered many of the series and authors 9yo dd has enjoyed. She also likes the A to Z mysteries, but wasn't sure what the reading level is...I know a 2nd grader who reads them.

When I was that age, I read and LOVED Anne of Green Gables.

What about the books by Maude Hart Lovelace? I really enjoyed them, in fact, I still read them! She wrote books about a girl named Betsy- from her childhood to getting married.

The Betsy-Tasy books?
