how the art gallery knew about this thread...

hello again! just so all of you know - whenever you go surfing the internet and check out an item or website, each time you click a link a 'cookie' is attached back to you... as such, when I checked out 'who' was checking out our website, what a surprise it was to find that there were 73! links coming from this site! so, alot of you were checking out this breastfeeder thingy. which, by the way, we don't particularly agree with the 'breast pump theory,' but that was presented by both The British Museum and the archaeologist in Germany. I do think that the bottle feeding device description is probably more accurate. So ladies, just be careful 'where' you surf, because there are folks out there that know you've been visiting

Ahhh..... Well, that certainly explains how you know your customers have "deviant, sexual minds" :LOL Makes me wonder what other chat rooms this item is linked to....

And this, ladies, is why you need to disable cookies and/or pay for privacy service (McAfee, etc.)

Look, mamas, have any of you read Mothering Your Nursing Toddler by Norma Jean Bumgarner? I hate to break it to you, but newsflash!!! many, many women throughout history have not nursed their babies BY CHOICE.

See Chapter 5, Glimpses Into Other Times and Cultures.

Quote:
Nursing and weaning are, like most of our lives as human beings, guided by cultural considerations, so much so that it is all but impossible to say what is "natural" for us.
p.76

Quote:
The care and feeding of children in Europe has a very mixed history, however, a history that contains the roots of many questions and problems we struggle with today. There is evidence from nearly two millenia ago that Greek and Roman parents did not necessarily follow their good doctors' advice on nursing and weaning. Soranus complained about babies being started on cereal at around forty days, well before the end of the six months of exclusive breastfeeding he recommended. Large numbers of infant feeding vessels are found in the graves of children in both ancient Greece and Italy. Remains of children with symptoms of rickets also suggest early weaning from the breast.
p. 79

I won't go on about all the non-nursing that went on in Europe through the ages, or some of the (to our minds) bizarre nursing taboos that arose in other cultures - such as denying babies colostrum - that Bumgarner and others cite.

But it is not correct to assume that all mothers throughout the ages up until our own have willingly nursed their babies.

One more thing...

thanks to Quirky to the insightful input. unless one is actively involved with this history, or has a real interest in it, you'd never realize how far we've really come in caring/feeding our babies. what's more, you think this pottery thing we sell is incredible? check out this link on another ancient art site - http://www.edgarlowen.com/b1167.jpg. this ancient baby feeder is made out of glass!

I appreciate you being willing to engage in a non-snarky dialog about this!
Maybe you'll stick around and join in on some of the other forums as well...

so interesting.... I think we've all gotten our history lesson today!
Yet, what i find most fascinating is just imagining how women from so long ago were much the same as us... only with different tools and different customs.
Thanks to Artemisgallery for definately not writing us off and informing us all-- even with our open-minds we can still manage to make room for little-known perspectives such as this.
