UN Global Action Plan for the Earth Eco Team Program

Thread Starter
In 1992, the UN held a conference to draw up plans to sustain our planet called Agenda 21. It said "The major cause of the continued deterioration of the global environment is the unsustainable pattern of consumption and production, particularly in the industrialized countries." Since 1992, the state of our planet hasn't gotten better because of our consumption. There was an article yesterday in the Independent about Tony Blair trying to make global warming a higher priorty of the G8. http://news.independent.co.uk/world/...p?story=607254 The research on global warming and it's ramifications is not good and our children will have to pay the results of our actions if we do not change our ways today.

I'm puttiing the sum of the UN's Eco Team program in 5 different threads in Mindful Home Management and hoping that others will go through the program with me. I had gone through it a number of years back but have declined in some areas since completing the program. This is my attempt to get better in some areas again. I'll be sharing some of my dark secrets on these threads and hope you will also. The original thread that I started on this and the possibility of an MDC Eco Team is at: http://www.mothering.com/discussions...=123530&page=3

Please note that these threads are not in News & Current Events, or whatever the current activism and debate forum is today. These threads are not here for debate. If you don't believe the scientific studies that our planet is in danger but believe other sources, just use the back button on your computer and don't come into these threads again. The threads are not for you but are for those wanting to make changes in their lives. I want this thread to just be for links to the other threads, general questions, and for people to subscribe. I'll make sure to edit this post for links if they start getting scattered.

Reported results from making the changes outlined in the program are:
41% - 51% less garbage sent into the waste stream
25% - 34% less water used
9% - 17% less energy used
16% - 20% less fuel used for transportation
These numbers are just reported averages. How much you lighten your footprint will depend on how much and what you do. You will save money by lessening your load.

I want to end this intro with two quotes:
"Never doubt that a small group of committed individuals can change the world -- indeed it's the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead
"Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed.” —Gandhi

I've been getting back on track with ecological responsibility that begins at home; I'm definitely participating. Thank you for posting this, especially at a time when I can do something about it, Madrone.

I'd read over your website and it's in keeping with steps I take, have taken or need to be taking at home, recently spurred into higher gear thanks to having recently given birth --there's nothing quite like a new baby to help a person realign one's priorities.

Thank you both for subscribing and being willing to do this with me. I didn't get a chance to put a link in for the garbage topic yesterday, so I edited the first post to put it in today. Not like it would be hard to find at this moment since mindful home management does not have many threads in it. But just for one day when it does have hundreds and hundreds.

Madrone,

I have a topic I’d like to do, if you want. I’ve been interested in shipped goods (on-line purchases, e-bay, trades, *mail* and etc) and participating here would really motivate me to research this issue. Let me know if you have a slot.

I’d also like to let you know that participating in this thread has motivated me to lower my thermostats tonight!

That is a good one! I have been wondering how to recycle priority mail packages if it is illegal to reuse them.

Glad to have all of you that are joining in with me. ICM , the eco team program that the UN drew up in their Global Action Plan has 5 topics: garbage, energy, water, fossil fuels, and consumption. Have you looked at my website yet? It has the program outlined out under treading lightly, ecosteps. http://www.geocities.com/a_natural_family/ Since AngelBee bumped up the original thread, I thought I would go ahead and paste my website stuff here. I knew having others join me would help me. Where do you think what you what you want to do on shipping would fit in? Would you want to put it as a special issue under one of the UN's topics? Or do you want to do it as a special topic of itself. I am open to anyone "hosting" any of the topics. The reason I was doing it this way this time is because we didn't ever get organized for different "hosts" last time. If we were neighbors, we would each select a topic and meet every two weeks at the topic person's house.

I’ll look at it again tonight. I looked over your website but maybe I got distracted looking at pictures of your family and your home :LOL

I think the shipping issue can definitely go under one of the UN topics. I’m not sure which one ~ my guess is that it could fall under consumption or fossil fuels.

You would know better than me if this kind of ‘spin off’ would be appropriate or not.

BTW, does general pollution fall under the various topics (garbage, fossil fuels, consumption)? Is that just too general of a word these days?

The program is about the individual making personal changes, so pollution is covered more as just making decisions that will pollute less. We can delve into issues further than the program the UN outlined though. I have already gone beyond the UN's stuff on water, so I'd be doing that if I copied from my website. And I want to go beyond the UN's stuff on electricity, although that will not be possible during the next two months.

I was thinking the same thing about the Fossil Fuels because the UN stuff was really focused on personal car use, yk? Anyway, I’ll wait until we do that one.
